Youth Orchestra Unites Community Through Music at Annual Fundraiser
2025-03-15

An exciting day filled with melodies and harmonies took place recently at Crossgates Mall, where the Empire State Youth Orchestra (ESYO) gathered to host its annual Playathon event. This unique fundraiser featured a variety of performances by 11 ensembles, showcasing diverse musical styles such as classical, jazz, and percussion. Among these groups was CHIME, an after-school initiative offered free of charge in collaboration with Schenectady City Schools. Attendees were also given a thrilling opportunity to lead the ensembles during their performances throughout the day.

In addition to the captivating performances, the Playathon provided an interactive experience for all ages. John Keal Music set up an instrument "petting zoo," allowing visitors to explore various musical instruments under the guidance of members from ESYO’s Young Leaders program. The event served as a vibrant celebration of the musicians' dedication and achievements, drawing together families, friends, and music enthusiasts alike. According to Becky Calos, ESYO Executive Director, this yearly gathering is a cherished occasion that highlights the collective efforts of all ESYO ensembles, united in one location to honor their progress and commitment.

Music has a profound impact on communities, fostering creativity and bringing people together through shared experiences. The Playathon not only showcases the exceptional talents of young musicians but also underscores the significance of music education in nurturing future generations. Such events inspire both participants and audiences, reinforcing the value of artistic expression and community engagement. Through initiatives like this, the ESYO continues to make a positive difference in the lives of students and the broader community.
