Jack O’Brien: A Master at the Helm

Five-time Tony Award-winning director Jack O’Brien, a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Tony Honor, will once again take the helm of this tour. His artistic leadership first brought "The Sound of Music" to the stage in 2015, and now he is set to repeat his magic. Under his guidance, the production will feature choreography by Danny Mefford, whose work adds a dynamic element to the performances. The scenic design by three-time Tony nominee Douglas Schmidt will create a visually stunning backdrop, while the costume design by Tony winner and honoree Jane Greenwood will bring the characters to life. Natasha Katz, an eight-time Tony winner, will handle the lighting design, enhancing the atmosphere and mood of each scene. Jonathan Deans, a four-time Tony nominee, will provide the sound design, immersing the audience in the music. Tom Watson will handle the hair and wig design, ensuring every detail is perfect. And Andy Einhorn will oversee the music supervision, ensuring the melodies are flawless.

The Story and Its Significance

"The Sound of Music" tells the story of Maria, a young aspiring nun who is sent to be a governess for a widowed naval captain's seven children. As she enters their lives, she brings joy and music, forging a deep connection with both the children and their father, Captain von Trapp. Against the backdrop of Nazi occupation in Austria, the von Trapp family leans on their music as a source of hope and a path to a brighter future. This story has touched the hearts of millions over the years and continues to resonate with audiences of all ages.

The Creative Team's Vision

A few years ago, a group of collaborative artists stumbled upon original conceptions for the stage mounting of "The Sound of Music" that had remained untouched. These discoveries were like awakening Sleeping Beauty herself. The resulting version of the classic is virtually unknown yet more dramatic, more detailed, more rapturous, and more touching than any previous production. The same artists are now returning with extreme enthusiasm and a keen sense of anticipation to complete the work they began. They believe that the original authors would be thrilled with the creative facelift this musical deserves, and they are confident that audiences will be as well.

Broadway and Film History

"The Sound of Music" originally debuted on Broadway in 1959, marking a significant moment in musical theater history. It then underwent a revival in 1998, further solidifying its place in the hearts of theatergoers. In 1965, a film adaptation was released, starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, becoming a cultural phenomenon. This combination of Broadway success and a beloved film has made "The Sound of Music" an enduring classic that continues to captivate audiences around the world.
