The 2025 Golden Globe Nomination Snubs & Surprises: A Deep Dive
2024-12-09
Among the Golden Globe nominees, there were both notable omissions and pleasant surprises. On Monday, December 9, the nominations for the 82nd annual Golden Globes were revealed, shining a light on the standout works in film and television this year. Emilia Pérez led the movie nominations with 10 in total, while The Bear took the lead on the TV side with five nominations, followed by Shōgun and Only Murders in the Building with four each. Comedian Nikki Glaser is hosting the ceremony, which will air live on Sunday, January 5, at 8 p.m. ET on CBS and streaming on Paramount+. Let's take a look at some of the biggest snubs and surprises from this year's nominations.

Snubs and Surprises in the Acting Categories

Danielle Deadwyler for 'The Piano Lesson'

In Malcolm Washington's directorial debut, Danielle Deadwyler delivered one of the most acclaimed performances of the year. However, she was overlooked in the supporting actress category, similar to her shocking snub for Till in 2022. For her work in The Piano Lesson, an adaptation of August Wilson's 1987 play, Deadwyler was recently nominated for a Film Independent Spirit Award. This omission is a significant disappointment.

Ryan Reynolds for 'Deadpool & Wolverine'

The Golden Globes are known for highlighting comedy, and Reynolds' work as Deadpool in one of the biggest films of the year was surely worthy of a nomination. Despite all the goodwill for him and his co-writing of the blockbuster's screenplay, he didn't make it into the race. His defense of comedic work as "also very difficult" compared to more dramatic fare only adds to the surprise of his snub.

Denis Villeneuve for directing 'Dune: Part Two'

Villeneuve's epic blockbuster received a best picture - drama nomination, but the filmmaker himself was not recognized for his directorial work. In 2022, he was nominated for Dune: Part One, leading many to expect him to repeat. This omission is a notable one in the world of science-fiction filmmaking.

The Apprentice's Surprise Nomination

Director Ali Abbasi's film about the early rise of Donald Trump was controversial from the start. Star Sebastian Stan scored a nomination for his transformative performance as a young Trump, despite facing challenges such as others in Hollywood being "too afraid" to discuss the film with him. Jeremy Strong also received a nod for his supporting performance as Trump's lawyer.

Marianne Jean-Baptiste for 'Hard Truths'

A 1997 Golden Globe nominee, Jean-Baptiste was expected to receive her second nomination for her performance in Mike Leigh's Hard Truths. Despite her lauded work, she was overlooked. However, she is having a successful awards season, having been named best actress by the New York Film Critics Circle and tying for a win at the L.A. Film Critics Awards.

Jon M. Chu for directing 'Wicked'

The splashy adaptation of the Broadway musical was hailed as one of the greatest and most ambitious movies of the year. While the stars of the film, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, were honored for their acting, the visionary behind the movie, Chu, was notably missing from the best directors list.

Saoirse Ronan for 'The Outrun' and 'Blitz'

Ronan gave two outstanding performances this year in The Outrun and Blitz, and both were expected to land her nominations in the lead and supporting categories. Her omissions in both are a big shock, especially considering her previous win in 2018 for Lady Bird.

Demi Moore for 'The Substance'

Demi Moore was expected to be nominated for her performance in Coralie Fargeat's provocative body-horror film, and she was indeed nominated. However, the film also managed to surprise by getting a nomination for her costar Margaret Qualley, as well as nods for best director, best screenplay, and best picture - musical or comedy.

Meryl Streep for 'Only Murders in the Building'

After getting a nomination for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series at the 2024 Emmys, Streep was shut out of the Golden Globes. The show's three main stars, Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez, were nominated, but Streep was not. Streep has an impressive track record with 30 Golden Globe nominations and eight wins throughout her career.

Liev Schreiber and Nicole Kidman for 'The Perfect Couple'

Despite an all-star cast led by Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber, the hit Netflix series did not receive any nominations. The story follows the Winbury family as their son gears up for his wedding and tragedy strikes, dragging the family into a murder investigation.

Kristen Wiig for 'Palm Royale'

The Apple TV+ comedy featured a buzzy cast, including Carol Burnett, Kristen Wiig, Allison Janney, Laura Dern, Ricky Martin, and Kaia Gerber. However, star power was not enough to secure a Golden Globe nomination for Wiig.

Larry David for 'Curb Your Enthusiasm'

After a few years off the air, the Larry David comedy returned for a triumphant 12th and final season in 2024. The Golden Globe-winning comedy received praise from critics, but it was not recognized by the Golden Globes.

Devery Jacobs, Paulina Alexis, and Lane Factor for 'Reservation Dogs'

In its third and final season, Reservation Dogs earned praise for ending on a poignant note. The cast, led by Devery Jacobs, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Lane Factor, and Paulina Alexis, brought their A-game. Despite past Golden Globe recognition and nominations with other awards shows, the series was not included in this year's list.

Vince Vaughn for 'Bad Monkey'

The Apple TV+ comedy starring Vince Vaughn as a detective turned restaurant inspector in southern Florida was a talked-about series when it premiered. Despite early predictions, Vaughn was not nominated, with the competition being fierce in the best performance by a male actor in a television series - comedy or musical category.

Ella Purnell for 'Fallout'

Prime Video's post-apocalyptic drama was an instant smash hit, with a stacked cast including Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Kyle MacLachlan, Moisés Arias, Xelia Mendes-Jones, and Walton Goggins. It was nominated for 16 Emmy Awards but was skipped over for the 2025 Golden Globes.
