3-Year-Old Girl in Backseat During Police Shootout with Gun-Wielding Passenger
2024-12-09
On a fateful Thursday, December 6th, in the heart of New York City, a series of events unfolded that would have a profound impact. The New York Police Department (NYPD) was alerted by ShotSpotter of a possible gunshot in the Crown Heights neighborhood. Officers swiftly set off in pursuit of a car with an out-of-state license plate hanging precariously by one hinge.

Key Events in the Shootout

Initial Pursuit

The chase led the officers to various locations. They arrived at a building on N. Portland Avenue around 3 p.m. local time. The driver, believed to be a woman and the mother of a baby, noticed a police car and took off, speeding through blocks and cutting through Bed-Stuy while running red lights. The car eventually got stuck in traffic, surrounded by police on all sides.

A man in the passenger seat attempted to exit but couldn't fully open his door. He was holding a gun and pointed it at the officers, triggering the shootout. NYPD Chief Jeffrey Maddrey described the tense situation as officers closely pursued the vehicle.

Aftermath and Rescues

The woman driving the car got out and tried to run. It was at this moment that officers noticed a child in the backseat. Amid the chaos, an officer yelled "Baby, baby" to stop the firing. Eventually, an officer entered the vehicle and removed the baby from the backseat.

The woman had two gunshot wounds on her right thigh. She and the baby were rushed to a local hospital. The man sitting in the passenger seat was shot and taken into custody after a short foot pursuit. He was wanted in a homicide case from March 2024. Although he has not been publicly identified yet, his family is being notified.

Weapon and Traffic Violations

A semi-automatic weapon was recovered at the scene, with a capacity for 30 rounds. It's not yet clear if the suspect fired his gun. In New York, except for guns used at competitions or ranges, the legal capacity is 10 rounds. Police also alleged that the woman violated several traffic laws and that the child was in the backseat without a car seat.
