The Artemis quintet, a diverse and intergenerational jazz ensemble, has been making waves in the music industry. Formed in 2016 by pianist Renee Rosnes, the group has quickly gained recognition for its unique blend of traditional jazz elements with contemporary flair. Most recently, the band topped Downbeat magazine’s reader’s poll as jazz group of the year for the second consecutive time. The release of their third album, “Arboresque,” further solidifies their position as innovators in the jazz scene. This album captures the essence of classic Blue Note Records while introducing fresh interpretations of jazz tradition.
Rosnes, serving as the musical director and organizational force behind Artemis, emphasizes that the group's primary focus is on collective musical expression rather than proving any point. The idea for the band originated from a French promoter's suggestion to celebrate International Women’s Day with an all-female ensemble. Although this was not something Rosnes had previously considered, she embraced the opportunity to collaborate with musicians she admired. The initial lineup included trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, bassist Linda May Han Oh, clarinetist Anat Cohen, saxophonist Melissa Aldana, and singer Cécile McLorin Salvant.
The group's formation led to a European tour in 2017, where they introduced a permanent rhythm section featuring Allison Miller on drums and Noriko Ueda on bass. Their performance at the Newport Jazz Festival in 2018 caught the attention of Don Was, president of Blue Note Records, who signed them immediately. The set was later featured on NPR’s “Jazz Night in America” program, showcasing their talent to a wider audience.
The success of Artemis lies in its ability to seamlessly blend the talents of musicians from different backgrounds and generations. By focusing on mutual respect and collaborative creativity, the group continues to push the boundaries of jazz music. With each new project, including the latest album “Arboresque,” they reaffirm their commitment to honoring the past while forging a new path forward in the jazz world.
