Mickey Mouse and Bluey's business partnership is expanding, as BBC Studios and Disney join forces. The animated movie will be crafted by Ludo, the Australian studio behind the "Bluey" television show. BBC Studios, with its global distribution and merchandising rights, will finance the project. Disney, which licenses the series for Disney+ and cable networks, will handle the theatrical release in 2027.
Joe Brumm, the creator of the character, will take on the roles of writer and director. He expressed his vision for the film, stating, "I want this to be an experiential event." The voice actors from the series will reprise their beloved roles, adding to the authenticity of the movie. Amber Naismith, with credits including "The Lego Movie" and "Happy Feet," will produce the film.
In a separate social media post, Joe Brumm announced that he would be taking a break from the "Bluey" series as it enters its fourth season. He explained, "To walk away from it while it's at such a height will seem crazy to some. But for now, I am finding it difficult to reach back genuinely into that four- to six-year-old world and write authentically." However, he clarified that this is not an announcement about the end of the show. His focus will now be on the movie.
Bluey has become a phenomenon, with an astonishing 50 billion minutes streamed in the United States in 2024, making it the number one streaming show according to Nielsen. This success has led Disney to keep the character within its fold, despite rarely releasing animated movies it does not own. The most recent example was "The Wind Rises" in 2013.
