After losing its ABC affiliation, Berkshire Hathaway's television station in Miami-Fort Lauderdale, WPLG (Local 10), is set to significantly increase its live news and sports programming. Starting on August 4, the station will expand from producing 56 hours of live content weekly to an impressive 93 hours. This decision comes after Disney reassigned the ABC affiliation to a subchannel of Sunbeam Television’s WSVN. The station plans to bolster its local offerings by hiring additional staff and creating new content, positioning itself as a leading broadcaster in South Florida.
In response to recent changes, WPLG is redefining its role in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale market. With the termination of its ABC affiliation, the station aims to enhance its local presence by offering extended news coverage. From Monday to Friday, viewers can expect morning broadcasts starting at 4:30 a.m., followed by noon updates, evening news segments, and late-night reports. Weekends feature similarly comprehensive coverage, ensuring that residents stay informed throughout the day. This strategy underscores the station's commitment to delivering timely and relevant information to the community.
Sports enthusiasts are also in for a treat with expanded sports programming. On Saturdays, Local 10 Sports will present editions at 9:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., complemented by a Sunday 9:30 p.m. broadcast alongside the existing Lexus Sports Sunday segment at 11:30 p.m. These additions highlight the station's dedication to catering to diverse audience interests while reinforcing its position as a premier local broadcaster.
WPLG President-CEO E.R. Bert Medina expressed excitement about this transformation, emphasizing the station's growth through hiring initiatives rather than layoffs. He stated that WPLG remains committed to being South Florida's primary local station. Beyond expanding news and sports, the station envisions creating more live, locally-focused content throughout the year, marking only the beginning of its ambitious expansion plan.
As part of its multi-channel strategy, WPLG continues to air subchannels featuring MeTV South Florida and Heroes & Icons Network alongside its digital platform, Local10.com. This move ensures a robust media presence across various platforms, further enhancing its reach and impact within the community.
