BGSU's continuous drive for excellence is evident through a series of significant initiatives. From the launch of a new music industry degree to enhancements in engineering education and improvements in athletics and multipurpose fields, the university is on a path of growth and innovation. "BGSU's Transformative Leaps in Education and Campus Life"
Launching a New Music Industry Degree
Bowling Green State University takes a significant step forward with the approval of a Bachelor of Arts in Music Industry. This program is set to prepare students for diverse careers within the billion-dollar music industry, encompassing production, management, communication, marketing, and technology. As reported by the Recording Industry Association of America, the music industry witnessed continued growth in 2023, reaching a record-high $17.1 billion. The new degree builds on the existing music industry minor and combines courses taught by renowned BGSU faculty from the College of Musical Arts, the Schmidthorst College of Business, and the College of Arts and Sciences. Students will be required to complete two internships or co-ops to gain practical experience and apply their learning. Interim Provost Glenn Davis emphasizes, "With the increased interest in bachelor degree offerings in music industry, BGSU is excited to offer this program. Our multifaceted approach combines world-class faculty expertise with relevant courses and real-world experiences to empower our students for successful careers." This also provides an opportunity for students with associate degrees in related fields to advance their education.
Moreover, the university's commitment to music education extends beyond degree programs. It offers a vibrant music scene with various performances and opportunities for students to showcase their talents.
Elevating Experiences in Student Athletics and Organizations
The board's support for improvements to Warren E. Steller Field and the multipurpose field adjacent to Charles E. Perry Field House is a game-changer. Steller Field, built in 1964 with traditional grass turf, has seen a decline in playing surface quality over the years. Planned improvements involve replacing the grass turf with all-weather synthetic turf, complete with drainage and other enhancements to enhance practice and game day experiences. The multipurpose field, a primary practice space for the Falcon Marching Band and other activities, has also experienced heavy use. To upgrade this 81,000-square-foot surface, the university will replace the existing all-grass turf with lined synthetic turf, creating a state-of-the-art outdoor rehearsal space for the band with lights, observation towers, water, power, and a sound system. This upgraded field will support a wide range of student and community activities. Design and pre-construction for both projects are set to begin in spring 2025, with an estimated completion in fall 2025.
The university's focus on student experiences extends to all aspects of campus life, ensuring that students have the best facilities and opportunities for growth.
Building upon an Innovative Partnership
Following the merger of Cedar Fair Entertainment Company and Six Flags Entertainment Corporation, the university's Resort and Attraction Management program has been renamed the Six Flags Resort and Attraction Management program. This one-of-a-kind program leverages a public-private partnership between BGSU and Six Flags to prepare students for careers in the expanding resort and attraction industry. Students earn their bachelor's degree in person at the standalone facility in downtown Sandusky near Cedar Point or through BGSU Online and can complete paid co-ops at select Six Flags parks nationwide. They also have the opportunity for internship experiences outside the company. President Rodney K. Rogers highlights, "The Six Flags program provides incredible learning experiences. We are pleased to continue our partnership, offering more opportunities for students to build their networks and connections through mentorship with industry leaders. Since its launch in 2020, the program has grown significantly and we look forward to its continued success."
The partnership between BGSU and Six Flags opens up a world of possibilities for students and prepares them for the challenges of the industry.
Enhancing Engineering Education
The board's approval for additional construction work on the Technology Engineering Innovation Center is a major boost to engineering education. Alongside ongoing construction, the reimagined Technology Building will see upgrades to the mid-bay area, enhanced existing labs and classrooms for experiential learning, and upgrades to HVAC, electrical, and safety systems. The west wing and second-story connector of the building will be demolished. Set for completion in spring 2026, the 24,000-square-foot facility will feature seven large-scale specialty labs for hands-on learning with the latest robotics and engineering technology. It will also house ultra-modern classrooms and collaboration spaces to support quality teaching and creative activities.
BGSU's investment in engineering education reflects its commitment to preparing students for the future of technology and innovation.
