Unraveling Billie Eilish's Social Media Dilemma

Social Media - A Double-Edged Sword

In an interview with Complex published on Thursday, Dec. 5, Billie Eilish, the 22-year-old "Birds of a Feather" singer, spoke candidly about her views on social media. She described how she once felt "off that s–t" when it came to being on X. And a couple of months ago, she took a break from Instagram and TikTok, which she found to be a liberating experience. "It was awesome," she revealed.During her tours, however, Eilish realized the importance of interacting with fans. Not being on social media made it difficult for her to see the videos and angles of the shows from the fans' perspectives. She explained, "I love seeing how people are feeling and thinking about the show. If I think something looks different, I want to change it." But once she goes on the internet to look for those videos, she gets sucked in and finds herself in a "problematic" situation. "Then I get all f—ed up, and I’m stuck. So I’ve been back on it, but I am trying to get off. It’s my cigarettes. It’s really a problem."

The Positives and Negatives of Social Media

When asked about the positives of being on social media, such as hosting Q&A sessions with fans on Instagram, Eilish admitted that some of it is awesome and she cherishes those interactions. But she also expressed her disappointment when people ruin the experience for others. "Some people make that kind of thing really hard. It’s sad to me," she said.In the past, Eilish has been open about her social media habits or lack thereof. In a conversation with British artist Stormzy for i-D in September 2021, she expressed her conflicted feelings. "I don’t always want to tell the world intimate details about my life, I don’t really want people to know everything about me, but at the same time, I want people to be able to feel seen and heard if they’ve experienced the same things I have."She also mentioned that sometimes she doesn't want to talk about what she's going through. "It’s a tough responsibility because it’s also not my responsibility. I don’t owe anyone anything."Previously, in 2020, when the "Happier Than Ever" singer quit reading Instagram comments, she said they were "ruining" her life. She told the BBC, "It’s way worse than it’s ever been right now. It’s weird: the cooler the things you get to do are the more people hate you. It’s crazy."Billie Eilish's journey with social media showcases the complex nature of these platforms and their influence on our lives. She continues to navigate through the ups and downs, sharing her experiences with the world.
