Brazil's President Lula da Silva in ICU After Brain Bleed Surgery
2024-12-10
On Tuesday, Dec. 10, a significant event took place as Brazil's President Lula da Silva underwent emergency brain surgery. Just a day prior, on Monday, Dec. 9, he had been transported to the Sirio-Libanes Hospital in São Paulo due to an intense headache. A MRI scan revealed an "intracranial hemorrhage" related to an accident that occurred at his home on October 19.

Details of the Surgical Procedure

During his hospital stay, the 79-year-old President underwent a craniotomy. As per the Mayo Clinic, this is a surgical procedure where part of the skull is removed to access the brain and drain the bleed. Following the procedure, he has been reported to be "well" and is being closely monitored in the ICU by hospital staff.

Post-Surgery Condition

In a news conference on Tuesday morning, the hospital stated that Lula was "lucid" after the surgery. Presidential spokesman Paulo Pimenta also mentioned that da Silva would remain in the ICU for at least another 48 hours. He emphasized that the president is stable, conscious, and calm.

Social Media Reactions

Several Brazilian leaders took to social media to express their well wishes. Brazilian Labor Minister Luiz Marinho wrote on X, expressing a "speedy and full recovery" for da Silva and adding "Get well soon!". This shows the outpouring of support for the president during this challenging time.

Previous Surgical History

This isn't the first time the Brazilian president has undergone surgery during his term. In November 2022, he had surgery to have a lump in his throat removed. And in September 2023, he was fitted with a hip prosthesis. These previous surgeries highlight the various health challenges he has faced.

Accident and Its Impact

Two months prior to the brain surgery, da Silva fell in the bathroom of his home in the Alvorada Palace and hit his head. He was transported to the hospital and received several stitches on the back of his head above his neck. Due to this accident, his planned trip to the 2024 BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia had to be cancelled. This incident shows the significant impact that such accidents can have on a person's life and schedule.
