Rediscover the Flavors of Chi-Chi’s with a Modern Twist

Reopening in 2025: A New Chapter for Chi-Chi’s

The Mexican restaurant chain Chi-Chi’s had an extensive presence with over 200 locations before its last restaurant closed in 2004. However, on Tuesday, Dec. 3, news emerged that the founder’s son, Michael McDermott, is spearheading the effort to reopen Chi-Chi’s locations. A source confirmed to PEOPLE that two restaurants will open in Minnesota in 2025. Michael, whose father Marno McDermott opened Chi-Chi’s in 1975 with Green Bay Packers alum Max McGee, signed an agreement with Hormel Foods. He plans to carry on his father’s legacy while adding a modern touch. “We have witnessed the profound impact our restaurant has had on individuals and families across the nation and firmly believe there is a significant opportunity to bring the brand back in a manner that resonates with today’s consumers – an updated dining experience that retains the same exceptional taste and Mexican flavor,” he stated in a press release. There are currently no details available regarding the renewed restaurant’s menu or specific locations as of Wednesday, Dec. 4.During its nearly 30-year run, Marno and McGee grew the restaurant chain to hundreds of locations nationwide. However, a series of ownership changes led to its closure in 2004. Just before the chain shut down all its restaurants, a hepatitis A outbreak occurred in a Pittsburgh-area location traced to green onions in the complimentary salsa. This incident was the largest hepatitis A outbreak in the U.S., with 650 people falling ill and four deaths.Over the past 20 years, the Chi-Chi’s brand has continued to expand its offerings in packaged salsas, tortilla chips, and other supermarket products. These products will remain available as the restaurants reopen.Chi-Chi’s is not the only beloved chain restaurant to face financial difficulties and pursue a fresh start. Red Lobster, for instance, filed for bankruptcy in May and has closed over 100 restaurants since then. But as of September, the chain announced it is close to exiting bankruptcy.

Following in Father’s Footsteps: Preserving the Chi-Chi’s Taste

Michael McDermott is dedicated to maintaining the essence of Chi-Chi’s while introducing subtle changes. He understands the significance of the brand’s history and the loyalty of its customers.
