The revitalization of the Lazarus Apartments in North Lawndale has transformed not only the living spaces but also the community spirit. Artistic tributes to Chicago's rich musical heritage now adorn the building, creating a vibrant and welcoming environment for residents. The installation of two mosaics and 25 glass murals has breathed new life into what was once a plain brown facade. During the winter months, these colorful artworks stand out against the snow, offering warmth and cheer to both residents and passersby.

A collaborative effort by four local artists has brought this vision to life. Alexie Young, JoVonna Jackson, Mike Stidham, and Nailah Golden each contributed their unique styles to honor musicians from various genres, including blues, jazz, gospel, house, and hip-hop. The artwork spans the first floor of the building, covering what used to be simple brown panels. Each artist was given creative freedom to express the essence of the musicians they chose, ensuring that every piece resonates with authenticity and passion. This artistic endeavor is part of a broader redevelopment project led by the Lawndale Christian Development Corporation, aimed at providing affordable housing and fostering economic growth in North Lawndale. The corporation's executive director sought to create something beautiful that reflects the city's cultural identity. The Lazarus Apartments now offer one-, two-, and three-bedroom units at rents ranging from $700 to $1,000 per month, making it an attractive option for many families. By integrating art into the fabric of the community, this initiative hopes to inspire pride and joy year-round, reminding everyone of Chicago's enduring musical legacy.
