Darlene Love: Cher Friendship Is a Lifelong Joy and Memory
2024-12-12
Darlene Love takes great pride in having a steadfast friend in Cher. The 83-year-old iconic singer reveals to PEOPLE that their friendship, which started in 1962 and has remained unbroken ever since, is one of the most remarkable events in her life. "We were discussing this during our last reunion," Love explains. "I had the honor of serving as a backup singer during her Heart of Stone Tour. Working with her was a true delight. It was amazing to witness where she is now and where she came from. To think that I had a small part in it all is beyond belief. And the fact that she holds me in such high regard continues to amaze me."

Cher's Unwavering Support

The "All Alone On Christmas" singer emphasizes that Cher "gives me my due" more than anyone else. "She appeared on Kelly [Clarkson's] television show a few months ago. And she said, 'If there was no Darlene Love, there would be no Cher.' " This praise leaves Love in awe that the legendary singer "still thinks that much about me." "It's truly humbling," she adds.

The Intertwined Careers

Love holds a significant place in Cher's recent self-titled memoir. Her presence is felt on multiple pages, detailing how the two artists have been intertwined throughout Cher's illustrious career. "That's just how she is," Love shares about her longtime friend. "Whenever we part ways, and then come back together, it's as if no time has passed. We just pick up where we left off." She continues, "When I tell you, when we're together, you'll see the depth of her love for me. Cher, especially Cher, doesn't offer such words lightly. She means every one of them."

The Power of Remembrance

Love's greatest takeaway from her friendship with Cher is the unwavering memory. "We're not constantly together, but even if two or three years pass and we don't see each other, she still remembers me. It's remarkable." This effort to keep the friendship alive extends to the holiday season. As the "Believe" singer insists, they must spend time together this Christmas. Love shares, "I told her, 'You know what? I'm coming to California for two weeks. I want to spend Christmas with my children and great-grandkids. Due to my schedule, I don't get to see them during Christmas.' She said, 'Come by. You better not come without visiting. You promised to be here for two weeks, so I expect to see you during that time.' "
