Remember that little song called “Coincidence”? It seemed to imply that former situationship Shawn Mendes stepped out on Sabrina Carpenter with his ex, Camila Cabello. (To jog your memory: “Your car drove itself from L.A. to her thighs / Palm Springs looks nice, but who’s by your side?”) Well, it appears that Mendes is finally ready to shed light on the rumored affair that gave rise to at least three diss tracks.

His Actions and Explanations

During an appearance on SiriusXM’s How’s Life, the 26-year-old singer told podcast host John Mayer (without naming names) that he did indeed visit an ex while dating someone else. He mentioned that he had been “with someone” when he decided to go “hang out with my ex.” In his version of events, Mendes informed that “someone” (likely Carpenter) that he was planning to visit his ex just a couple of days before leaving for the trip. “I, two days before going to hang out with my ex, express, I’m gonna go hang out with my ex because I have unresolved feelings,” he said. “Maybe instead of two days, it could have been two weeks … I’m an impulsive person.”This situation sounds awfully similar to Shawmilla’s April Coachella reunion that Carpenter makes reference to in “Coincidence.” While it doesn’t seem like Mendes is taking full responsibility for the rumored lapse in “common sense” as Carpenter called it, he does seem to be moving towards an apology. “The biggest lesson I’ve learned is no one gets out of this life without getting hurt, and no one gets out of this life without hurting someone,” he added.

His Thoughts on Future Relationships

When Mayer asked Mendes if he was excited to get into another relationship, he responded, “yes, for sure … I think, yeah,” then added, “I guess as long as we’re living, we are healing.” Mendes is also “trying to have immense grace for himself,” especially when it “feels like there is no room to get things wrong online.” But when asked if he’d date a fellow songwriter again, he admitted he wouldn’t stop himself from falling in love.“It’s a no-brainer to me that the suffering that is from hearing a song maybe talking about you in a way you don’t want to be talked about is not even close to the beauty of falling in love with someone for the first time,” Mendes said. “But … it’s a funny feeling to feel like you’re being written about and maybe the whole picture is not being expressed.”Well, this could have been a great opportunity to express the “whole picture,” but for now, we are left with these vague musings about suffering and hurt.
