Originally a live, two-person scene presented before a theater audience, the format has undergone a transformative shift. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the showcase pivoted to virtually filmed pieces, adapting to the realities of the time. Expanding the Scope and Depth

Felicia Joseph, senior vice president of casting at ABC Entertainment Group, recognized the need to think bigger. "In this new format," she explains, "we really set out to create an opportunity for these actors to not only showcase their talent on camera, but also do so in a 20-to-30-minute kind long-form piece." This ambitious vision has resulted in a staggering 22,000 self-tapes, from which 10 exceptional actors were selected to participate in the showcase.

Collaborative Storytelling

The program's commitment to inclusivity extends beyond the performers, as it also sought out the perfect candidate to craft the story for the new showcase format. They found their match in actor and writer Eric Myrick, mentored by Brittany Nichols, the co-executive producer of the hit series "Abbott Elementary." Myrick's concept, "D-Day," was developed into the centerpiece of the showcase, blending the DNA of "Abbott Elementary" with a fresh and captivating narrative.

The showcase also tapped into the expertise of actor-director Karan Soni, who has strong ties to the "Abbott Elementary" team. Sharon Klein, head of casting at Disney Entertainment Television, has ambitious plans for the showcase's future, envisioning it as a twice-annual affair. "This gives us the opportunity to discover twice as many actors, twice as many writers, twice as many directors," she explains, underscoring the program's commitment to amplifying diverse voices and perspectives.
