Club Culture Resurgence: A Reflection of Contemporary Youth Spirit
2025-02-19

The resurgence of club culture and music has become a defining feature of contemporary youth expression. As students at Marist University embrace the vibrant energy of dance and club genres, they are finding new ways to connect with each other and express their individuality. The year 2024 saw a significant shift in musical preferences, with many students gravitating towards artists like FKA twigs, Bassvictim, Shygirl, MGNA Crrrta, and 2hollis. These musicians have brought a fresh wave of creativity that resonates deeply with today's youth.

Club music encompasses a wide array of subgenres, from techno and house to disco, EDM, and hyperpop. Each genre offers its unique flavor, appealing to different tastes and experiences. For instance, Kiara Espinal, a senior at Marist, attributes her love for house music to English artist Nia Archives and her time studying abroad in London. Similarly, Brooke Begley discovered the joys of high-energy, high-pitched sounds through SOPHIE’s music during her freshman year. SOPHIE, a legendary producer, played a pivotal role in shaping hyperpop, a genre often misunderstood but increasingly appreciated for its bold and innovative sound.

Following the pandemic, there has been a renewed enthusiasm for club culture, providing a platform for diversity and shared joy. This underground scene has emerged as a safe space for individuals who might feel marginalized by mainstream society. Events like Paul’s Dolls, hosted by Linux in New York City, celebrate trans women and create an inclusive environment where everyone can express themselves freely. Music has always been a powerful tool for bonding over shared experiences, and clubbing brings people together in a way that transcends social barriers. Hanna Beth Lee, another Marist student, highlights how Charli XCX’s album captures the moment where pop music and club culture serve as forms of escapism, reflecting broader social, political, and economic trends.

The rise of club music also reflects a growing nostalgia for past decades. As social media accelerates trend cycles, people are revisiting and reinterpreting earlier musical styles. Artists are embracing irony and humor, using it as a creative force to explore and refine their craft. The current fascination with 2010s rave music exemplifies this trend, blending old and new elements to create something fresh and exciting. Ultimately, the resurgence of club culture symbolizes a collective desire for freedom, connection, and self-expression, reinforcing the importance of music as a unifying force in our lives.
