DIY Venue Havenhaus Revitalizes Memphis Music Scene
2025-02-27

In the heart of Memphis, a unique music venue is emerging as a beacon for underground artists and DIY enthusiasts. Havenhaus, initially a homegrown project by musician J Opp, has transformed from a house party in Parkhaven Lane into a downtown haven for diverse musical acts. The new location, situated near the Amtrak station and behind Earnestine & Hazel’s, aims to showcase the rich tapestry of Memphis' lesser-known music scene. This move represents a significant evolution for the venue, which has already hosted over 500 performances in less than four years. With aspirations to book shows five nights a week, Havenhaus hopes to draw more attention to Memphis' vibrant alternative music community.

Havenhaus began as a grassroots initiative in 2019 when J Opp opened his home to musicians and fans after many smaller venues closed during the pandemic. Opp recognized the importance of community and wanted to provide a space where artists could perform and connect with audiences. “Memphis music played a crucial role in my growth,” he reflected. Benjamin Reese, another musician, joined forces with Opp, helping to promote the venue through social media and booking bands. Together, they created a platform for various genres, including punk, hip-hop, electronica, folk, and country, fostering a diverse and inclusive environment.

The success of the house parties on Parkhaven Lane was undeniable, with more than 150 shows held over nearly three years. However, the growing popularity soon outstripped the space's capacity. In response, Havenhaus moved to a garage in the Cooper-Young district, hosting an impressive 380 acts in just seven months. Even this larger venue quickly became too small, leading Opp and Reese to seek a new location that could accommodate their expanding audience. They found the perfect spot downtown, where they aim to highlight the broader spectrum of Memphis music beyond Beale Street's blues.

Opp and Reese are optimistic about the future of Havenhaus in its new setting. They hope to attract touring bands and challenge Nashville's dominance in the region's music scene. “We want Memphis to be reconsidered as a must-visit destination for artists,” said Reese. Their dedication to the local music community has already garnered significant support, raising over $4,000 through crowdfunding efforts. As they look forward to booking shows five nights a week, Opp emphasizes the importance of preserving the love and support that has fueled Havenhaus' growth. “Our goal is to keep this vibrant energy alive for future generations,” he concluded.
