2025-03-01

An exclusive musical event, intO tHe WiLd, is set to captivate audiences at Jan Serr Studio on March 26th and 27th. The two-night presentation by Present Music will showcase world premieres of compositions by Andy Akiho and Kamran Ince, alongside renditions of iconic works. Additionally, the evening will honor the late illustrator Edward Gorey with a special performance by Carla Kihlstedt. This unique gathering promises an evening filled with innovative music and tributes to significant artistic figures.

World Premieres Highlight Elemental and Existential Themes

The first night will introduce two groundbreaking compositions that delve into diverse themes. One piece explores the significance of an element from the Periodic Table, while the other contemplates existential questions through passionate expression. Both composers have earned prestigious accolades and their works have been performed by renowned orchestras worldwide.

Japanese-American composer Andy Akiho debuts Copper Canvas, which delves into the properties of element number 29. Akiho's recent composition, Seven Pillars, received Grammy nominations and has garnered critical acclaim. Turkish-American composer Kamran Ince presents Then, nothing, a work that engages with profound existential inquiries. Ince’s achievements include winning the Rome Prize, Guggenheim Fellowship, and Lili Boulanger Memorial Prize, and his compositions have been featured by major symphony orchestras.

Honoring Icons: From Steppenwolf to Edward Gorey

Beyond the premieres, the event pays homage to influential artists whose legacies continue to inspire. An unexpected arrangement of a classic rock anthem will be presented, along with a tribute to a beloved illustrator's centennial birthday. These performances highlight the enduring impact of these icons on contemporary culture.

Pulitzer Prize winner David Lang will offer a unique interpretation of Steppenwolf’s Born to Be Wild, adding a fresh perspective to this timeless anthem. Carla Kihlstedt will perform 26 Little Deaths, a haunting tribute to Edward Gorey’s darkly humorous alphabet book, The Gashlycrumb Tinies. Accompanied by slides of Gorey’s illustrations, Kihlstedt’s vocals and violin create a mesmerizing experience. This performance also marks the release of a collaborative album between Kihlstedt and Present Music, available from Cantaloupe Music label.
