Holy Family Conservatory Honored for Century of Musical Dedication
2025-02-24

In recognition of its enduring commitment to the arts, the Holy Family Conservatory of Music in Manitowoc has been awarded the prestigious Wesley Teply Community Service Award. This accolade celebrates the conservatory's remarkable 100-year legacy of fostering musical education and community engagement. Sponsored by the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, the conservatory will mark this milestone with a centennial celebration in December. The award presentation will take place at the Capitol Civic Centre on March 1st during the Lakeshore Wind Ensemble’s concert.

A Century of Musical Excellence: From Humble Beginnings to Lasting Impact

In the early autumn of 1925, three Franciscan sisters—Davidica, Benjamin, and Celerine—arrived in Manitowoc with a vision to cultivate musical appreciation among students. Initially residing at Saint Boniface Convent, they soon realized the overwhelming interest in music lessons necessitated a dedicated space. A large brick house on South 11th Street became their new home and teaching venue. Despite sparse furnishings, the sisters persevered, transforming piano benches into dining tables as they nurtured young musicians with just three pianos.

Over the decades, the conservatory grew significantly, eventually relocating to the modern Franciscan Center for Music Education and Performance on Calumet Avenue in 2013. Throughout its history, more than 13,000 students have benefited from its programs, including current enrollees who continue to thrive under expert guidance. Beyond traditional lessons, the conservatory enriches the community through diverse events such as student recitals, alumni concerts, art exhibitions, and annual summer camps.

The upcoming Wesley Teply Award ceremony not only honors the past century but also highlights the ongoing dedication of the conservatory to inspire future generations of musicians.

As a journalist covering this event, it is heartening to witness how an institution founded on humble beginnings has evolved into a cornerstone of musical education. The Holy Family Conservatory exemplifies the power of perseverance and community spirit, proving that with passion and commitment, even the simplest start can lead to extraordinary achievements. This award serves as a testament to the lasting impact of their efforts, inspiring others to pursue their dreams with unwavering dedication.
