Reviving the Spirit of Live Music: Bookclub's Journey from Underground to Iconic Venue
2025-02-18

After overcoming early challenges, Cam Stacey and Kevante "K.O." Weakley have transformed a once-cease-and-desist order into a thriving music scene. The co-founders of Bookclub reflect on their journey, now standing in the renovated basement of a historic Lincoln Avenue building that once housed the legendary Elbo Room. This space, rich with musical history, has become a canvas for their innovative vision. Stacey expresses excitement about exploring new possibilities, emphasizing the endless potential they see in this venue.

The origins of Bookclub trace back to 2019 when Stacey and Weakley, long-time collaborators since high school, reignited their passion for music while attending Loyola University. Initially, they sought a place to showcase their own work but soon found themselves at the heart of an underground movement. Despite facing setbacks, including a cease-and-desist order just days before their first show, they persevered. By quickly adapting and finding alternative spaces, they established Bookclub as a unique, invite-only venue that quickly gained popularity among local and international artists alike.

As Bookclub’s reputation grew, so did its community. Nick Heineman, executive director of the Chicago Independent Venue League, and artist Maren Rosenberg joined forces with Stacey and Weakley. Together, they recognized the need for expansion to better serve the growing audience and artists. In September, they finalized the purchase of the former Elbo Room, marking a significant milestone. Over the next few months, the team embarked on extensive renovations, modernizing the infrastructure while preserving the venue's historical charm. The result is a state-of-the-art performance space designed to elevate every aspect of live music experiences.

Bookclub officially opened its doors in January, receiving rave reviews from artists who praised both the sound quality and the atmosphere. Looking ahead, the venue plans to host live music five nights a week, complemented by daytime events like trivia nights and dueling pianos. The team also envisions transforming the second floor into a livestreaming hub, adding another layer to their multifaceted approach. Through hard work and innovation, Bookclub honors the legacy of the Elbo Room while carving out its own distinctive path in Chicago's vibrant music scene. Their success underscores the power of perseverance and community in creating something truly special.
