More than two and a half decades ago, a simple neighborly invitation laid the foundation for something extraordinary. Guyz ‘N Dollz, founded by Barbara Kirschner, has transformed into a beloved community band, dedicated to sharing the joy of live music in various care facilities across the Valley. Uniting Seniors with the Magic of Broadway
Origins and Formation
The group's inception was sparked by an informal gathering. Barbara Kirschner invited a couple who had recently moved from California for dinner. The husband's love for singing and the wife's poetry writing led to the birth of an idea. After that, a few friends joined in, and their first performance at a retirement center was a resounding success. This simple gathering grew into a full-fledged community band.
Each member brings a unique story and talent. Some are in their 60s to 80s and come from diverse professional backgrounds such as medicine, law, and academia. Their combined efforts create a vibrant and engaging musical experience.
Growing Membership and Repertoire
Since that first show, Guyz ‘N Dollz has expanded to a group of 15 members. They have a new hour-long show each performance season, running from November to April with rehearsals starting in August. Currently, they have about 17 shows booked.
Their repertoire features well-loved Broadway numbers and familiar songs from past decades. This year, their opening song is “Consider Yourself.” The show includes sections like Best of Broadway, a travel section with “Hit the Road Jack,” a variety section with a duet of “Blue Skies,” a small group performance of “Singin’ in the Rain,” and a full group performance of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” During the rock and roll section, their Elvis makes an appearance. There's also a sing-along for the audience to join with “Put on a Happy Face.”
Impact on the Community
Beyond the music, Guyz ‘N Dollz has a profound impact. Proceeds from their shows go to Rosie's House, a Phoenix-based nonprofit dedicated to eliminating barriers to high-quality music education. Through music, they support the youth in developing their full creative and personal potential.
The members, being older themselves, can relate to the residents they perform for. They bring laughter and joy, creating a positive atmosphere. As Kirschner said, “We laugh a lot and have a good time. We really enjoy the people at the retirement centers.”
