This incident at Bartlett Elementary School has raised serious concerns and sparked a discussion about the treatment of children in educational settings.

Unacceptable Punishment in Texas Elementary School

Incident Details

On Wednesday, December 4th, students in one first grade class at Bartlett Elementary School were informed that they could no longer use the bathroom after losing a "restroom badge" in the hallway. According to reports from NBC affiliate KPRC 2 and CBS affiliate KHOU, this decision led to a series of unfortunate events. Mom Ashley Chancey shared with PEOPLE that at least six students had accidents that afternoon. Her son was forced to work in an unhygienic environment surrounded by urine and with classmates in soiled clothing. Fellow classroom mom Amber Johnson also told KPRC that some students were in great distress, crying to go to the bathroom.

After the school day ended, the teacher sent a message to parents stating that she had told the students around noon that they could no longer use the bathroom. This incident has left parents like Chancey deeply concerned and demanding action from the school district to ensure such a situation never happens again.

School District's Response

On Wednesday, the Conroe Independent School District sent a message to parents, stating that the punishment was "not indicative of the safe and loving environment we foster at Bartlett Elementary." The administration further explained that they were made aware of the situation in which restroom privileges were revoked and that they had spoken with the parents of the students who had accidents. A current staff member will serve as the substitute teacher for the remainder of the week while the investigation into the matter continues.

In a statement, the Conroe Independent School District confirmed that the teacher "is no longer employed" with the district. The statement emphasized that this incident does not reflect the work of the thousands of exceptional educators in the district. They are committed to supporting the students and families affected by this event and fostering a culture of mutual respect and care.

Parents' Concerns

Parents like Ashley Chancey are firmly advocating for a policy to protect basic human rights, such as restroom usage. They believe that humiliating or dehumanizing children by denying their basic needs is unacceptable, especially at a young age. Such situations can have long-lasting consequences on a child's love of education and overall well-being.

Chancey's words carry weight as she emphasizes the importance of creating a safe and respectful environment for children in schools. She hopes that the school district will take this incident seriously and implement measures to prevent similar situations from occurring in the future.
