Former Music Educator Faces Legal Repercussions
2025-04-18

A former music teacher from Kettering faces potential imprisonment following a series of legal proceedings related to child pornography charges. Initially set for trial on Monday, he is now looking at a possible sentence ranging from six to eighteen months per count during sentencing on May 16. The case has garnered attention due to its complexities and the individual's previous role within the education system.

Christopher Koehler, once employed by Kettering City Schools, primarily worked at Fairmont High School after joining in 2012. Records indicate his involvement in various extracurricular music activities. In late 2023, allegations emerged when a former middle school student reported inappropriate behavior and exchanges with Koehler via text messages. This led to his administrative leave shortly thereafter.

Legal proceedings commenced with an indictment in June 2024. Koehler initially pleaded not guilty but later admitted guilt to four out of six felony charges under a plea agreement. However, just before sentencing in October, he withdrew these pleas, citing disagreements over terms.

Defense attorney Dennis Lieberman emphasized that the evidence pertains solely to personal devices found at Koehler’s residence, unrelated to his professional duties. Despite this distinction, Koehler's plea agreement designates him as a Tier II sex offender, imposing strict residency restrictions near educational institutions and requiring biannual address registration for 25 years.

As the case moves forward without a resolution through plea bargaining, the defense plans to present their findings in court. Attorney Lieberman remains steadfast, underscoring the irrelevance of the number of counts against his client.

Moving ahead, all eyes will be on the upcoming sentencing date where further details and consequences may unfold, impacting both the individual and the community involved.
