2024-12-06
‘Tis the time when the air is filled with the excitement of Christmas approaching. Families are gearing up for gatherings, friends are making plans for dinners, and the Yuletide spirit is in the air. And what better way to enhance these festive occasions than with some great music? Gambit has curated a playlist of holiday tunes by New Orleans artists that will surely add a bounce to your holiday spirit.
Musicians Spreading Holiday Cheer
This year, several New Orleans musicians have already embraced the holiday spirit. In late November, The Revivalists frontman David Shaw released “Christmas!”, a holiday-themed cover of George Michael’s “Freedom”. His second solo album this year showcases his musical versatility. Americana band Ever More Nest, led by singer-songwriter Kelcy Wilburn, dropped a three-song EP of country holiday tunes. From the fun “Back in the Doghouse on Christmas” to the poignant “Where Do Holidays Go” and a sweet rendition of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, their music touches the heart.Honoring Local Icons
Producer Mikecol has crafted a sweet tribute to the late Fred Parker. This Black man brought joy to New Orleans kids for decades and became a local icon as 7th Ward Santa. His tracks blend bounce and jazz, creating a unique musical experience.Local Shop and Musician Collaboration
Last year, local shop Dirty Coast partnered with musician Pat Smith to create a seasonal song. Smith took it a step further, imagining where Santa Claus would be on the day after delivering all the toys. “Santa Don’t Want Your Cookies” finds St. Nick in the French Quarter, enjoying beignets and a Hand Grenade. This song is now available on streaming platforms, adding to the holiday musical repertoire.New Orleans Spin on Holiday Tunes
On Instagram, guitarist Joshua Starkman and comedian Frank White put a New Orleans spin on “Jingle Bells”. Santa Claus worries about getting a boot in the CBD and swerving potholes in the Lower Garden District, giving the song a local flavor. Rapper T99ZY also has a short Grinch-y new track on his social media. While not a remix, it echoes the viral song “Trip Out” he released earlier this year, adding to the holiday musical diversity.Take a listen to this amazing playlist and let the holiday music fill your heart with joy. Happy holidays!
