A Unique Musical Identity

Among the thirteen a cappella groups at the University of Virginia, Ektaal stands out as a beacon of cultural fusion. The group’s mission is to celebrate and preserve South Asian musical heritage while sharing it with the world. Nikita Majumdar, who handles public relations for the group, plays a pivotal role in maintaining this connection. She manages social media platforms, updates the website, and organizes events such as concerts, ticket sales, and promotions. Her efforts ensure that Ektaal remains a vibrant part of the university’s cultural landscape.Majumdar’s journey with Ektaal began during her second year at UVA. Within just three semesters, the group became an integral part of her life. It was not only where she found lifelong friendships but also where she discovered her passion for performance and her deep connection to South Asian culture. “From the moment I auditioned, I knew Ektaal would provide a nurturing environment,” Majumdar recalls. Growing up in Ashburn, music was always present in her life, whether through solo performances or communal bhajans—Hindu devotional songs. Her grandfather’s love for Hindustani classical music inspired the entire family to participate in these musical sessions, leaving an indelible mark on her heart. “Music has always brought my family together,” she reflects.

Celebrating South Asia’s Rich Tapestry

South Asia is a region characterized by its vast diversity, encompassing numerous cultures, each with its own distinct traditions. For Ektaal, representing this rich tapestry in their musical arrangements presents both a challenge and an opportunity. The group strives to incorporate elements from various styles, including Carnatic music from South India, Hindustani classical music from Northern India, and Bollywood tunes from Mumbai. Each style brings its own flavor, contributing to the group’s eclectic sound. By blending these diverse influences, Ektaal creates a harmonious bridge between past and present, tradition and innovation. The result is a captivating experience that resonates with listeners, inviting them to explore the depth and beauty of South Asian music. The process of arranging these songs requires meticulous attention to detail. Members of Ektaal work closely together, ensuring that each arrangement respects the integrity of the original compositions while adding a modern twist. This balance is crucial in maintaining the authenticity of the music while making it accessible to a broader audience. Through their performances, Ektaal not only entertains but also educates, fostering a greater appreciation for South Asian culture within the UVA community and beyond.
