Japanese Breakfast Unveils Enchanting Music Video for "Orlando in Love"
2025-01-14

The indie rock band Japanese Breakfast has introduced a visually captivating music video for their haunting ballad "Orlando in Love." This song, inspired by the Renaissance poet Matteo Maria Boiardo's work, showcases frontwoman Michelle Zauner's emotive vocals. The video features bassist Jungle twirling inside a shimmering seashell, embodying the allure of a mythical siren. Zauner envisioned a whimsical narrative centered around a sea-dwelling protagonist living in an RV, entranced by this enchanting figure.

The aesthetic of the music video draws inspiration from gothic literature and classic art. It reflects the influence of Eduard von Grützner's painting "The Connoisseur," leading Zauner to imagine Orlando as a contemplative friar on a quest for his elusive love interest. The song serves as a profound commentary on the human tendency to succumb to temptation and face the consequences that follow. Directed by Zauner herself and filmed by Peter Ash Lee, the video captures the essence of the track and sets the tone for their upcoming album For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women).

This new album marks a significant milestone for Japanese Breakfast, following their Grammy-nominated release Jubilee in 2021 and Zauner's acclaimed memoir Crying in H Mart. The forthcoming 10-track collection, set to debut on March 21, explores themes of longing and introspection. Fans can look forward to tracks like "Men in Bars," featuring actor Jeff Bridges. Additionally, a film adaptation of Zauner's memoir is in development, directed by Will Sharpe. As they embark on a spring tour, including performances at Coachella and stops in major cities, Japanese Breakfast continues to captivate audiences with their evocative music and storytelling.
