The Harmonious Convergence: UMD Students and VocalEssence
2024-11-19
UMD students recently engaged in a remarkable musical experience as they sang side by side with the esteemed members of VocalEssence. The chorus of voices that filled Weber Music Hall was a sight to behold, resembling the northern lights against the night sky, with each note rising and falling in a symphony of colors and blending together in a cosmic dance. This was truly an awe-inspiring event.
An Opportunity of a Lifetime
Christopher Mason, DMA, an assistant professor and director of choral activities in the UMD Department of Music, emphasized the significance of this moment. "This is a touchstone point that people will remember for their lives," he said. Leading the masterclass was VocalEssence Artistic Director and Founder, Philip Brunelle, an internationally-renowned conductor and choral music scholar with an impressive list of accolades. For Mason, having the chance to "peer behind the curtain" and witness Brunelle's artistry was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. "Hearing it from ten feet away is just really special," he added. The Masterclass Experience
The masterclass provided UMD students with the unique opportunity to sing alongside VocalEssence members and receive immediate feedback from Brunelle. Keegan Foster, a music performance student, described the experience as "immersive." "We were really excited to be part of it," he said. Fellow music performance student Ben Jorgenson appreciated the chance to interact with working professionals in the music industry. "You get to see someone already doing what you hope to do someday," he explained. "These experiences really benefit you in many ways." Victoria Mitchell, a music education student and aspiring high school choir teacher, focused on Brunelle's advice about music selection and interpretation. "It will be amazing to take these experiences and his advice and apply them with my students one day," she said. The Evening Concert
After the learning experience supported by the UMD Robert and Kathleen Carlson Choral Music Fund, VocalEssence presented an evening concert. UMD students had the opportunity to put their newfound knowledge into practice by joining the choir for one combined piece. All the proceeds from the concert were donated to scholarships for UMD music students. Mason was deeply moved by the event. "Those sounds and those experiences become part of the cloud of creative energy that permeates your whole existence," he said. "I was really honored to be there and witness them experiencing such a special thing."Preparing for Success
UMD students were actively rehearsing with the renowned VocalEssence ensemble, getting ready for their evening performance. Keegan Foster, a music performance student, interacted with a member of VocalEssence, a world-renowned choral group. This interaction added to the students' growth and prepared them for their future careers. As Foster said, "I'm getting such a great education here and I know I'll be able to be successful in my career because of that."
