On a serene evening at the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa, two celebrated musicians will bring the rich tradition of Hawaiian music to life. Wilson Kanakaʻole and Jarret Roback, both renowned for their contributions to island culture, will perform together on Thursday, January 23, 2025. This free concert, part of the Hawaiian Music Series, will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the Ocean Lawn, offering attendees a unique blend of traditional and contemporary sounds. Spectators are encouraged to bring their own seating arrangements, including blankets and low-back chairs, to fully enjoy the performance amidst the scenic backdrop. Free parking is available, with validation provided upon arrival.

The roots of Hawaiian music run deep within Wilson Kanakaʻole, whose family legacy has significantly shaped his musical journey. Hailing from Lahaina, Kanakaʻole studied at the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College’s Institute of Hawaiian Music, where he honed his skills as a guitarist and vocalist. His father, Eric Kanakaʻole, and his late uncle, Nelson Waikiki—a legendary ukulele player—have been instrumental in shaping his musical style. Through collaborations with notable artists like the Barefoot Natives, Kanakaʻole has become a respected figure in the local music scene.

Jarret Roback, originally from Oʻahu, brings over two decades of experience to the stage. With a career spanning more than 25 years, Roback has shared the spotlight with prominent Hawaiian artists such as John Cruz, Ernie Cruz Jr., Sistah Robi Kahakalau, and Lehua Kalima. Beyond his musical pursuits, Roback serves as a dedicated firefighter with the Maui Fire Department, following in the footsteps of his father, who balanced roles as both a policeman and musician. This dual commitment underscores Roback's dedication to community service and artistic expression.

The collaboration between Kanakaʻole and Roback promises an evening filled with enchanting melodies that reflect the evolution of Hawaiian music. The monthly Hawaiian Music Series, supported by the Lahaina Restoration Foundation and the Maui County Office of Economic Development, continues to be a beloved tradition in the community. Thanks to the generous hosting by the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa, this series offers a platform for showcasing the vibrant cultural heritage of the islands. For those seeking to immerse themselves in the beauty of Hawaiian music, this event is not to be missed.
