I Adore Moana But Struggle to Love the Moana Movies
2024-12-07
I was deeply in love with the idea of loving Moana. Over the years, I tried my best because I hold a special place for the titular character. But after Moana 2 was scheduled for 2024 and I watched it in theaters, I finally faced the truth. Moana is one of my all-time favorite Disney characters, yet I have reservations about the movies.
Unraveling the Enigma of Moana and Her Films
Introduction through Music
When Moana hit the screens in 2016, I was a senior in high school, completely hooked on Hamilton. My friends and I were intrigued by this Disney movie mainly because Lin-Manuel Miranda composed its music. At that time, I didn't have easy access to theaters and went only a few times a year. But I did get the soundtrack, and I fell deeply in love with songs like "How Far I'll Go" and "You're Welcome". They became regulars on my playlist, and I especially adored the lyrics of "How Far I'll Go". As someone about to leave home for college, those words about going beyond and finding something new really resonated with me. Even today, I still consider it one of the best Disney princess songs. And whenever "You're Welcome" plays, the volume goes up, and I sing along loudly, especially the rap.Overhyped and Disappointing
After months of listening to Moana's music, I finally watched the movie. It's crucial to note that many around me considered it not only one of the best Disney movies of that decade but one of the greatest ever. I set my expectations very high, knowing how much I cherished the film's music and how excited people were. But when I saw it, I have to admit, I was underwhelmed. In hindsight, it was a lesson in what happens when something is overhyped and you go into a movie with expectations that are too high. So, in a way, it's not just the movie's fault; I also played a part. That's why I can understand why others treasure Moana. But when you go in thinking it will be the best thing ever and it turns out to be just good, it makes it hard to love.Clunky Storytelling
Every time I've watched Moana (which I think is about three times), my biggest complaint is the segmented nature of the story. It feels like a collection of mini-quests crammed together into one big mission. I never felt like I had enough time to get to know the characters and their situations. This was a common opinion when Moana 2 was criticized, as it was originally intended to be a TV show. But I felt the same way about the first movie. With Moana's home, the introduction of Maui, and the quests involving the coconut guys and that abysmal shiny crab, there was just too much going on. It didn't make the story confusing; I understood the point clearly. But I was overwhelmed by everything they put into the film, and the same goes for its sequel.Focus on Moana
The fact that the only character I'm really drawn to, especially in the first movie, is Moana emphasizes the above point. Honestly, I'm not a fan of Maui. He's funny at times, but his cocky demi-god act got old quickly. And in the second film, he didn't really change. While he was a bit more aware of those around him, he still thought he was the center of attention, which I'm not particularly entertained by. Also, Moana's family is very sweet, but we don't get to know them well. And although I love Pua and Hei Hei, they are mostly used for jokes. So, outside of our leading lady, I have a hard time connecting with anyone else.Admiration for the Character
Despite my dislike for the movies, I still have a deep affection for the character Moana. Auliʻi Cravalho's vocal performance is outstanding. Her songs are wonderful, and she is one of the most empowering Disney characters. Her fearless pursuit of her dream is inspiring (and something I've tried to do in my own life). Her willingness to learn and fail is admirable. Her love and appreciation for her family, friends, and culture are also very moving. Plus, I love her sense of adventure and humor, and when they combine, it's magical. All these qualities make her a well-rounded and wonderful woman. She is the best role model, and I wish I had her to look up to when I was a kid. Knowing that little kids have Moana to look up to makes me very happy. Despite my issues with the movies, I'm glad they exist. I understand how beloved they are, and I truly wish I liked them more. But I've learned that you can love a character and not their movie, and that's perfectly okay. Now, if you want to form your own opinions about these films, you can stream Moana with a Disney+ subscription and catch Moana 2 in theaters.
