I Watched the Premiere of the First Commercially Streaming AI-Generated Movies
2024-12-11
Movies have long been a means of transporting audiences to different worlds. Last month, I found myself in the Chinese Theater, an iconic Hollywood venue where the Oscars are held. While watching a movie, I was transported back in time, recalling one of my biggest regrets. In high school, I reviewed a classmate's movie for the school newspaper, savagely criticizing its special effects. I had no idea about the art of special effects or how to review a movie properly. That student rightfully hated me, and I've felt bad about it ever since.

TCL's AI Movie Strategy

Today, I'm sitting in the Chinese Theater again, watching AI-generated movies. These films have their own set of issues, such as inconsistent character appearances and lip-syncing problems. TCL, the largest TV manufacturer, has created a free TV service called TCL+ supported by targeted advertising. It has also established the TCL Film Machine to produce AI-generated movies. The general manager of TCL Research America, Haohong Wang, explained that TCL's AI movie and TV strategy is funded by targeted advertising and aims to create a "flywheel effect." Catherine Zhang, TCL's vice president, emphasized the "lean-back binge-watching experience" offered by TCL's streaming strategy.Starting December 12, TCL will air five AI-generated shorts on TCL+. These films include "The Slug," "The Audition," "Sun Day," "Project Nexus," and "The Best Day of My Life."
