Kate Middleton Honors Princess Diana's Legacy with Visit to Children’s Hospice in Wales
2025-01-30

Princess Kate recently paid a heartfelt visit to Tŷ Hafan, a children’s hospice in South Wales, continuing the legacy of her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. The hospice, which supports families with children facing life-shortening conditions, was one of Diana’s final patronages before her untimely death in 1997. Kate, now the new patron, spent time engaging with the children and their families, participating in activities that highlighted the holistic care provided by the facility. Her visit underscores her commitment to this cause, reflecting both personal dedication and the enduring impact of Princess Diana’s work.

The morning of January 30th was filled with emotional moments as Kate toured Tŷ Hafan, located in Sully, South Wales. This hospice, meaning “Haven House” in Welsh, has been a beacon of support for countless families since its establishment. Princess Diana agreed to become its patron even before construction began, back in 1995. Sadly, she never saw the project come to fruition, but her vision was realized shortly after her passing. Kate’s role as patron follows in the footsteps of both Diana and her father-in-law, King Charles, who held the position from 1997 until recently.

Irfon Rees, Chief Executive of Tŷ Hafan, expressed deep gratitude for Kate’s involvement. He emphasized that her patronage would inspire not only the children and their families but also the staff and supporters who keep the hospice running. During her visit, Kate participated in a "stay and play" session, where she engaged with the children through meaningful activities designed to bring joy and comfort. She also met with bereaved families, offering them solace and understanding during their challenging times.

Patrick Jephson, former private secretary to Princess Diana, played a crucial role in supporting the hospice. In 2022, he donated $130,000 to fund a new wing dedicated to providing respite and support for grieving families and staff. Jephson recalled Diana’s unwavering commitment to end-of-life care and children’s hospices, describing it as an embodiment of love in action. His donation ensures that Diana’s legacy continues to thrive at Tŷ Hafan, benefiting those who need it most.

Kate’s visit to Tŷ Hafan marks a significant moment in her public role. It highlights her ongoing dedication to children’s welfare and her alignment with the values championed by Princess Diana. By embracing this cause, Kate not only honors her predecessor but also strengthens the royal family’s connection to vital charitable work. The princess’s compassionate engagement with the children and families at the hospice demonstrates her commitment to making a positive difference in their lives.
