Keith Urban Remembers Taylor Swift's 2009 Tour Opening: 'She Was Beyond'
2024-12-12
During a Thursday, December 12 appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, the 57-year-old country star opened up about having the 34-year-old pop megastar open for him during his 2009 Escape Together World Tour. It was a long time ago, but Urban recalled that the experience was great. He mentioned that even back then, Swift was amazing. Sitting up front and watching her sing, he could see that she was playing way past where she was already. It was truly remarkable.

Swift's Prank on Tour

During their chat, the host played a clip of Swift performing alongside Urban dressed like a member of the band KISS. This was a prank she pulled. Urban shared that he had a song called "Kiss a Girl" and on the last night of the tour, Swift came out dressed as Ace Frehley from the band KISS. For a moment, he thought it was actually KISS. It was such a great moment.

Collaboration on Fearless (Taylor's Version)

Urban then opened up about how he ended up collaborating with the 14-time Grammy winner for the track "That's When", which was featured on Fearless (Taylor's Version). He also sang harmonies on "We Were Happy" on the same album. He recalled that Swift had a song she wanted him to do and simply texted him, asking him to sing on it. He was at a food court at a mall when he received the track. Sitting there with his AirPods in, listening to this unreleased Taylor song, it was a crazy experience.

Swift's Songwriting Talent

In May, following the release of her The Tortured Poets Department album, the "Somebody Like You" musician opened up to PEOPLE about Swift. He emphasized that her songwriting is extraordinary. There are truly no adjectives to describe it. She is such a great writer, and this new album is just more proof of that in really great ways. He added that Swift doesn't sound like anyone. He likes singers whose voices are immediately recognizable, and there are many other singers that sound like them, but not Swift.
