Local Musician to Showcase Guitar History at Brooke County Museum
2025-05-03

A renowned local musician is set to bring the past to life through melodies and stories during an upcoming event. Aaron Carey, a skilled guitarist and educator, will delve into centuries of musical evolution with his presentation titled "800 Years of Music for Classical Guitar." This free program will take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on May 18 at the Brooke County Historical Museum and Culture Center in Wellsburg.

This event offers attendees not only a chance to enjoy live performances spanning different eras but also insights into the rich tapestry of classical guitar music. Attendees can look forward to refreshments served alongside Carey's performance, which will cover a range of musical periods, from medieval times to contemporary pieces. With over three decades of teaching experience, Carey has shared his passion for music across various platforms, including discussions on National Public Radio and lectures for the West Virginia Humanities Council. His work extends beyond education; he creates original compositions inspired by Appalachian culture under the name Nechochwen, released internationally on Swedish labels.

Carey’s artistic journey includes performances at prestigious festivals such as Fire in the Mountains in Wyoming and collaborations with artists worldwide. His latest album reflects his fascination with natural landscapes, focusing on the Ohio River region. As the museum celebrates its golden jubilee year, visitors are invited to explore exhibits showcasing historical dining rooms, schoolhouses, and even a county jail cell. The venue itself houses numerous treasures, including displays dedicated to locally produced glassware and artifacts from a bygone era's retail store. For those unable to attend during regular hours—Thursday, Friday, and Sunday afternoons between April and October—alternative visit arrangements may be made via phone contact.

Through events like these, communities foster cultural appreciation while preserving heritage sites that tell compelling stories about their roots. Such initiatives encourage people to engage actively with history, ensuring traditions endure for future generations. By blending education with entertainment, programs like Aaron Carey's contribute significantly to strengthening societal bonds rooted in shared experiences and values.
