Madison's Winter Music Extravaganza Returns to Support Epilepsy Research
2025-01-10

The annual music festival, known as the “Freezing Man,” has once again descended upon Madison, Wisconsin. This year’s event spans four days and features an impressive lineup of artists. Organized by Joey’s Song, a nonprofit dedicated to epilepsy awareness and research, the festival aims to raise funds for this critical cause. Since its inception, the festival has grown from a single day to a multi-day celebration, attracting both local and international talent. All proceeds will be donated to epilepsy research, with artists performing pro bono to support the mission.

A Heartfelt Mission Behind the Music

This unique music festival was born out of personal tragedy and a desire to make a difference. Founded by Mike Gomoll after losing his son Joey to Dravet Syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy, the organization seeks to assist other families facing similar challenges. The festival has become a symbol of hope and solidarity for those affected by epilepsy. Gomoll emphasizes that the event is about more than just music; it’s about creating a community that fights for a better future.

Gomoll shares that his family wanted to do something meaningful in memory of Joey. Joey’s Song now serves as a beacon of support for families receiving difficult diagnoses. Through their efforts, they aim to ensure that no one feels alone in their battle against epilepsy. The festival has grown significantly over the years, evolving from a modest one-day event into a four-day extravaganza. The success of previous years has fueled its expansion, allowing it to reach more people and raise more funds for research.

Artists Unite for a Greater Cause

The lineup for this year’s festival includes renowned artists who have generously offered their time and talents free of charge. Despite some challenges, such as wildfires affecting certain performers, the spirit of unity remains strong. Artists are prioritizing the cause over personal circumstances, demonstrating the depth of their commitment. Gomoll expresses gratitude for the overwhelming support from the music community, noting that many artists have traveled despite uncertain conditions at home.

Among the notable acts are Portugal. The Man, John Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls, and Silversun Pickups. The festival also includes an auction where attendees can bid on exclusive items like signed guitars. Gomoll highlights that every dollar raised goes directly toward epilepsy research, with artists waiving their fees to maximize the impact. Despite the absence of Eve 6 due to wildfire evacuations, the festival remains robust with over 50 artists ready to perform. So far, Joey’s Song has raised $370,000, with hopes of surpassing the million-dollar mark. Tickets are still available for the remaining shows, inviting more supporters to join this heartfelt cause.
