Set Design and Staging
This year's production continues the brand new vision unveiled in 2023. The sets are a sight to behold, featuring flying wirework, bursting ghostly entrances, and a terrifyingly silent, towering puppet in the role of “Christmas Yet-to-Come.” The staging is meticulously crafted to enhance the story, transporting the audience into a world of wonder. The attention to detail in the set design and staging truly brings the story to life, making it a visual feast for the eyes. The traditionalist carols and dancing that return year after year add to the charm of the production. They create an atmosphere of merriment and celebration, making the audience feel like they are part of the Christmas spirit. The Lead Actor - D. Lance Marsh
D. Lance Marsh first stepped into the role of Ebenezer Scrooge in 2023, bringing a larger, more intimidating physicality to the character. Marsh, who stands at six-foot-two and weighs two hundred fifty pounds, defies the traditional notion of a frail and elderly Scrooge. His powerful, booming voice makes him a figure that the supporting cast genuinely fears, not just because of the financial consequences he might impose.Marsh's choice to embrace his physical presence has added a new dimension to the character. He has figured out how to make his size work for him on stage, creating a memorable and impactful performance.Music in the Production
The way Lyric Theatre uses music in “A Christmas Carol” is unique. The songs are all traditional yuletide carols and Christmas hymns, sung naturally by the characters as they enjoy the company of friends and family. This approach sets the show apart from traditional musical theater.Even without original songs or dramatic solos, music remains the focus. It expresses joy, gratitude, and faith in a time beset by poverty, labor, and the kind of greed and selfishness that Scrooge represents. For Scrooge, music is something he initially despises as it bypasses the brain and goes straight to the body. But as the story progresses, the appreciation of music becomes a gradual arc for him. When the music finally penetrates Scrooge, it brings a powerful transformation. In the most important musical moment of the show, as he is back in his bedroom and about to embark on a new life, the wonderful choir moment when they come down the aisle has a profound impact. It is music that represents joy, community, and humanity, and Scrooge's epiphany is the moment he allows music back into his life and heart. The harmony and power of the chorus and their carols are captivating, even for those who are not normally fans of solemn, religious Christmas songs. It is a testament to the power of music in this production.Lyric Theatre's “A Christmas Carol” runs now through December 27th at their Lyric at the Plaza Theatre.
