Vick's atonement began in 2009 when he was signed to the Philadelphia Eagles as a backup. The following season, he took over as the starting quarterback and led the team to a 10-6 record and a playoff berth. He won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award and became everyone's favorite player to control on Madden. His jerseys became immensely popular again, and he showed that he could still be a dominant force on the field.
After a few more years with the Eagles and some time with the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers, Vick retired in 2015. He still holds several NFL records, including the average yards per carry and the most career rushing yards by a quarterback. Lamar Jackson is now closing in on his records, but Vick's impact on the game cannot be denied.
Vick is a native of Newport News and was a star at Ferguson and Warwick high schools. In his final three seasons of high school football, he totaled nearly 6,000 yards of total offense and 61 touchdowns. His talent brought college football coaches from all over to Virginia's Tidewater region and cemented his place among the state's best athletes.
At Virginia Tech, Vick chose Frank Beamer and went on to have a successful college career. In his two seasons as a starter, the Hokies went 22-2 and won a Big East title. His dominance on the field was like nothing football fans had ever seen before. He was a unique combination of speed, elusiveness, and arm strength.
Recently fired Dawson Odums went 15-31 in four years, and the program was in need of a fresh start. Vick, with his experience and reputation, could be the catalyst for change. If he can turn Norfolk State into a winner quickly, it would be a tremendous feel-good story for the school and the community.
In this changing landscape of college football, Norfolk State has turned to a hometown hero and a big name to help it harness some goodwill and garner some NIL contributions. Vick's presence could bring attention and support to the program and help it compete at a higher level.
The comparison between Vick and Sanders will be inevitable. Both are former NFL stars making the leap into college football coaching with little or no experience at that level. Sanders has had great success at Jackson State, and if Vick can replicate that at Norfolk State, it will be a major achievement.
Only time will tell if Vick will be a good college football coach. He has the talent and the experience, but coaching at the college level is a different beast. However, his passion for the game and his connection to Norfolk State give him a good chance of success. This is another opportunity for Vick to prove himself and write another chapter in his remarkable career.
