This year, the music department at Oak Park River Forest High School (OPRF) has achieved an unprecedented milestone by sending 23 students to the Illinois Music Education Association Conference (ILMEA). The school's A Cappella Choir also earned a prestigious spot among six selected high school choral ensembles. Four students garnered top honors in various categories, demonstrating the depth of talent and passion within the school's music program. Students prepare their music independently before the conference, where they refine their performances through rigorous rehearsals. The ILMEA experience offers invaluable exposure to collegiate-level directors and fosters inspiration among young musicians.

This year, 23 students from diverse musical disciplines were chosen to represent the school. Brett Linzing secured first place in Jazz Set for the second consecutive year, while Jude Peterson achieved first place in Jazz Piano. Clara Frantzen and Roy Koerner also distinguished themselves with first and second-place wins in composition categories, respectively.

Over the two-and-a-half-day festival, students engage in intensive rehearsals, refining every detail of their performances. These sessions focus on perfecting elements such as tempo and stylistic nuances, ensuring that each performance is polished and cohesive.

The preparation process is both challenging and rewarding. Choir director Meredith McGuire, an OPRF alumna herself, recalls her own experience being selected for All-State. "It's an incredible honor and a transformative experience," she says. The ILMEA Conference provides students with the opportunity to perform under the guidance of collegiate directors, exposing them to new levels of musical expertise. Additionally, a pre-conference performance allows parents and community members to witness the students' progress and offers the ensemble a chance to practice before the main event.
