Music Industry Thrives Amidst Digital Transformation

The global music industry has demonstrated remarkable resilience, with subscription streaming services leading the charge in a competitive market landscape. According to data from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), total revenue in the recorded music sector reached an impressive $29.6 billion in 2024. This figure represents a 4.8 percent increase compared to the previous year and marks the tenth consecutive year of growth. Subscription-based accounts have surged by 10.6 percent, reaching 752 million users globally, while advertising-supported platforms experienced more modest gains at 1.2 percent.

Streaming continues to dominate the music industry's financial landscape, generating over $20.4 billion in annual revenue for the first time. Representing 69 percent of the total recorded music income, this segment has outpaced the entire industry's earnings from 2003 to 2020. Despite the prominence of digital formats, traditional physical media faced challenges in 2024, with revenues dropping by 3.1 percent after a strong performance in 2023. However, vinyl sales remained robust, growing by 4.6 percent and extending their upward trend into an 18th consecutive year.

Every region across the globe contributed positively to the industry's success, with notable double-digit growth rates observed in emerging markets such as the Middle East & North Africa, sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America. These regions saw increases of 22.8 percent, 22.6 percent, and 22.5 percent respectively, underscoring the potential for further expansion through innovation and technology adoption. IFPI CEO Victoria Oakley emphasized that while the overall growth rate slowed slightly from 2023, it remains enviable compared to other sectors. She highlighted the crucial role of artists like Charli XCX, Taylor Swift, and Benson Boone, whose creativity fuels the continued evolution of genres including country music.
