P-R Music Review: Recalling 2024's Musical Memories
2024-12-19
When it comes to music, it often evokes memories that are deeply ingrained in our hearts. This past year, as I reflected on the music I encountered, my thoughts didn't focus on critical analyses or ratings. Instead, it was the memories that each song brought forth that truly mattered.

Unforgettable Musical Moments of 2024

"Your Blood" – Aurora – "What Happened to the Heart?"

Aurora, the mystic-toned Norwegian singer, has achieved great success in the states with hits like "Runaway" and "Cure for Me". Her latest album holds a special place in my heart, and it might just be my favorite of the year. I vividly remember the first time I listened to "Your Blood" while taking a walk in Downtown Plattsburgh. Standing on the corner of Elm and Miller, the beat dropped, and I was instantly captivated. Just as I mentioned in my original review, this dance groove has an electric energy that makes one smile uncontrollably. It's a song that leaves a lasting impression.

"Racist, Sexist Boy" – The Linda Lindas – "Growing Up"

The Linda Lindas have a unique charm that I can't resist. Their teen girl punk band embodies the '80s garage band spirit, where kids live their dreams. At the 2024 Osheaga Music and Arts Festival in Montreal, I nearly missed their set due to my habit of running late. But by some miracle, I made it just in time. Watching them perform their signature song "Racist, Sexist Boy" was a truly memorable experience. This grimy, gritty punk song was written in response to a racist insult faced by drummer Mila de la Garza at school. Yet, seeing an old metalhead dad headbanging and raising fists alongside a young girl was a powerful reminder of the generational power of punk.

"Like That" — Future, Metro Boomin and Kendrick Lamar — Single

I'll never forget waking up on the morning when "Like That" was released. As someone who usually tries to avoid getting caught up in celebrity feuds, I was initially hesitant. But the headlines and video reactions to Kendrick Lamar's diss on two of the biggest rappers in the game drew me in. What followed was a wild few months in music as everyone seemed to have an opinion. It was a petty and crude feud, but it was also a lyrical battle like no other. While Kendrick's "Not Like Us" may be the more iconic song, it was the cold bars of "Like That" that will always bring me back to that moment. So, from dancing to Aurora on Miller Street to moshing at a Babymetal show, this has been another amazing year for music. I appreciate anyone who has joined me on this musical journey. What were your favorite songs or musical memories of the year? Feel free to share with me at browe@pressrepublican.com. Until next year, keep on rockin' in the free world.
