A beloved literary saga is set for a transformation into television, as Prime Video teams up with Sony Pictures Television to bring Wang Dulu’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” novels to the small screen. According to Deadline, Jason Ning and Ron Moore are spearheading the production of this drama series, aiming to stay closer to the source material than Ang Lee’s acclaimed 2000 film adaptation. This ambitious project seeks to explore the intricate world of ancient Chinese folk heroes in greater depth, while also addressing the challenges faced by their traditions amidst modern influences.

Sony has long expressed interest in adapting the “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” universe into a series format. Two years ago, when the rights to Dulu’s works were reacquired through a deal with Vertigo, the studio quickly entrusted Ning with the task of developing the show. However, it wasn’t until last year that Moore officially joined the team. Currently, he is simultaneously working on another high-profile Sony project for Prime Video—a television adaptation of the popular video game series “God of War.”

The original novels, collectively known as the Crane-Iron Pentalogy, were published between 1938 and 1944. They delve into the lives of four generations of youxia, or traditional Chinese warriors celebrated in folklore. At its heart lies the poignant tale of Shu Lien and Mu Bai, two fighters grappling not only with their forbidden love but also with the encroachment of modernity upon their cherished martial traditions. Through breathtaking settings and rich character development, the books weave an enduring narrative about legacy, passion, and change.

In addition to Ning and Moore, several key figures contribute to the production effort. Among them are Maris Davis from Tall Shit Productions, Johnny Levin, Roy Lee representing Vertigo, and Hong Wang and Qin Wang on behalf of the Wang Dulu estate.
