Rockefeller Center's Head Gardener Selects 2024 Christmas Tree
2024-12-04
Erik Pauze, the head gardener at Rockefeller Center since 1995, undertakes the annual task of selecting the ideal tree for the plaza. His criteria for the perfect tree are quite specific. Pauze emphasizes that it must be a Norway spruce, standing at least 70 feet tall and measuring 40 to 42 feet wide. In 2022, he shared these details with TODAY.com. Additionally, the tree needs to be large and stable to bear the weight of the wires, cables, lights, and of course, the star placed on top. “I look for that grand, beautiful shape, with a nice green and full appearance, a tree that one would desire in their living room during Christmas,” he stated at that time.

The Evolution of the Tree Selection Process

Pauze disclosed to the Rockefeller Center magazine this year that although his role has remained relatively unchanged over the past three decades, the process varies from year to year. “Typically, throughout the entire year, almost every day, I am constantly thinking about this year's Tree, the next year's Tree, and perhaps even the Tree after that,” he mentioned, noting that the search for this year's tree began in July 2020. “As I was driving down the road, I spotted the magnificent Norway Spruce right in front of me. I knocked on the door and had the pleasure of meeting Earl Albert. I inquired if he would ever consider donating the Tree to Rockefeller Center. His immediate response was a resounding yes.”

The Significance of the Norway Spruce

The Norway spruce holds a special place in the selection process at Rockefeller Center. Its tall stature and full branches make it a visually striking choice. Pauze explains that its height allows it to dominate the plaza and catch the eye of visitors from afar. The wide spread of its branches provides ample space for the various decorations and lighting to be hung, creating a magical display. Moreover, the Norway spruce's green color remains vibrant throughout the holiday season, adding to the festive atmosphere. It is a tree that truly embodies the spirit of Christmas at Rockefeller Center.

The Importance of Earl Albert's Donation

Earl Albert's decision to donate the tree was a crucial moment in the annual tradition. Pauze's encounter with him was a serendipitous event that set in motion the process of finding the perfect tree. Albert's generosity allowed Rockefeller Center to continue its long-standing tradition of having a magnificent tree. The donation not only provides a beautiful centerpiece for the plaza but also serves as a symbol of the community's spirit and cooperation. It is a testament to the power of a single act of kindness in creating a memorable holiday experience for millions.

The Care and Maintenance of the Tree

Once the perfect tree is selected, extensive care and maintenance are required to ensure its longevity and beauty. Pauze and his team work tirelessly to keep the tree in optimal condition. This includes regular watering, fertilization, and protection from the elements. They also ensure that the wiring and lighting are installed safely and securely to prevent any accidents. The tree is constantly monitored to address any issues promptly and make any necessary adjustments. Through their meticulous care, the tree remains a stunning sight throughout the holiday season, bringing joy to countless people.
