Initial Incident and Identification

On the afternoon of Saturday, Dec. 14, the County of Kauai made a solemn announcement. The Kauai Police Department (KPD) identified the missing woman as Lauren M. Cameron, 32, of Anchorage. This news came as a shock to her family and friends. "Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Lauren," said Kauai Fire Department Chief Michael Gibson. The efforts of the first responders and partners in this search have been truly commendable.

Kauai Fire Department personnel responded around 3:10 p.m. local time on Wednesday, Dec. 11, to a report of a missing swimmer at Hanakāpī‘ai Beach. According to reports, Cameron entered the water and was quickly swept away by strong currents. It was a tragic turn of events that left everyone concerned.

Our hearts go out to Lauren’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. The KPD Assistant Chief Kalani Ke expressed the community's empathy. "We appreciate everyone’s involvement with this multi-day search," he said. This search has been a collective effort, and the community has come together to support the search.

Hiking and the Tragic Incident

Before the tragic incident, Cameron was hiking on the Kalalau Trail with her boyfriend. This peaceful activity took a dark turn when she went into the water to rinse off and got swept away. Her boyfriend reportedly tried to save her by throwing a floatation device.

Jacob Neal, Cameron’s brother, shared some details with the outlet. "My sister said that she was in a cave last night and like some people on jet skis checked up on her and then somebody on a boat checked up on her and then they couldn’t find her." These accounts add to the mystery surrounding her disappearance.

The county tells PEOPLE in a statement on Monday, Dec. 16, that there is no additional information at this time. This has left many with unanswered questions and a sense of uncertainty. Those with information about Cameron’s whereabouts are encouraged to call KPD Dispatch at 808-241-1711 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers Kauai at 808-246-8300. Every piece of information could potentially lead to her safe return.
