Uncovering Shep Rose's Transformation After BravoCon
BravoCon 2023: A Dark Moment in Rose's Life
BravoCon usually brings excitement for the network's stars, but for Shep Rose, the 2023 convention in Las Vegas was a different story. As he found himself in a blacked-out state over the weekend, Rose was left questioning what had happened. "I was on my couch in a ball and wondering what the F just happened, and was really mad at myself," he recalls. There were no major incidents, but he could sense that people weren't as enchanted with his time in Las Vegas as he had hoped. It was a moment that made him realize things had been coming to a head and left him feeling frightened and unsure of what to do.The Impact on His Relationships
Rose tried to connect with his Southern Charm costars Craig Conover and Austen Kroll, but they rebuffed his advances. This was a painful and confusing experience for him, especially considering the years they had spent together through good and bad. "We've gone through all this together over the years, we've seen each other at our worst, our best and everything in between. How can you not be supportive and empathetic?" he asks. Instead, he leaned on his family, spending Thanksgiving with them at The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia. Their support helped him start to come to terms with what had happened.Ayahuasca Retreat in Costa Rica
After the BravoCon incident, Rose received a call from Andy Cohen, who encouraged him to be more cognizant of his behavior. This led him to explore different ways to deal with his issues. He heard about the Rythmia Ayahuasca retreat in Costa Rica from his friend Bailey Bial and decided to give it a try in January. The seven-night experience was "revelatory" for him, helping him untangle "a lot of webs inside of me." "Everything opened up," he says.Therapy and Drinking Guidelines
When he returned home, Rose explored traditional therapy, although it didn't immediately click. But it made him more aware of his behavior. He also set guidelines for himself around drinking, avoiding liquor and sticking to beer or wine. "It's setting rules for yourself and really working not to break them, even though sometimes you do get excited around certain friends and stuff. But I know who the right people to spend time with, and I try to do that," he explains.Moderating Drinking at a College Football Game
Rose recently celebrated a small win by moderating his drinking at a college football game. "I'm such a social animal. It's important to try to get your fix in ways that are more palatable than sitting on a bar stool for several hours," he says. He was able to enjoy the game without getting carried away, showing his progress in managing his drinking.Reconnecting with Costars
Rose had expected filming season 10 to help him reconnect with Conover and Kroll, and it did lead to some tough conversations. Both Conover and Kroll have also made changes to their own lives, with Conover paring back on his drinking and Kroll controlling himself well. Rose feels that they are all in the process of recalibrating their lives and that their friendship will continue to evolve.Looking to the Future
For now, Rose hopes to "continue to operate in a fair but honest way." He knows that there is still a long way to go, but he is committed to making positive changes in his life. As he looks to the future, he anticipates that having kids and a wife will bring even more stability and change. "That's what everyone says it does, right?" he says.
