Skrillex's Insights on the Music Industry and Quincy Jones
2024-11-18
On Monday (Nov. 18), Skrillex shared his profound thoughts about the music industry. In a series of posts on X, he not only teased a forthcoming project but also reflected on a once-in-a-lifetime meeting with Quincy Jones. This journey of self-reflection and exploration offers valuable insights into the world of music.
Thriving in the Music Industry
In the first post, the producer wrote, "I’ve never felt more inspired and in lockstep with my intentions as an artist." As he nears the completion of his next work and final project for Atlantic Records, he can't help but feel a sense of existentialism. The majority of his releases have been through Atlantic subsidiaries, such as Big Beat Records and his own OWSLA imprint. This long-standing partnership dates back to his 2010 debut EP Weekends!!! and includes significant works like his 2014 debut album Recess, 2023 LPs Quest for Fire and Don’t Get Too Close, along with 2024 singles “Push” and “Pepper.” This extensive discography showcases his artistic growth and influence in the industry.Looking Ahead as an "Independent" Artist
Skrillex then referred to a yet-unannounced project, expressing his excitement to get it out and focus on more releases in 2025 as an "independent" artist. However, he pointed out that the term "independent" is somewhat strange as he still depends on his team and other creatives and executives. He wants to find ways to simplify the dissemination of music and art, observing that many artists are in a constant state of panic. The music industry, he believes, is like politics, designed to be almost impossible to understand. He has seen many artists get caught up in the illusion and delusion of the business, highlighting the dangers faced by young artists. But he is blessed and lucky to have lived through his experiences and will continue to do his best as an artist, creating things that provoke beauty and emotion.Reflecting on Quincy Jones
The producer continued his thread by reflecting on the recently deceased music icon Quincy Jones. He shared that he got to meet Quincy Jones once when he came to one of his shows and spent time chatting after. This encounter left a lasting impression on him, and Quincy Jones has become his absolute hero. His passing has definitely put some things into perspective for Skrillex.Grammy Wins and Beyond
This past February, Skrillex won the best dance/electronic recording Grammy for his Fred again.. and Flowdan collaboration “Rumble.” It was his ninth Grammy win. He is nominated in the same category this year for his work co-producing Fred again.. and Baby Keem’s “leavemealone.” His success in the Grammy arena is a testament to his musical talent and innovation. He concluded his posts on X by emphasizing that it is truly in the journey that the best things come when they aren't expected. He encourages artists to make things for the smile.
