2024-12-18
The beloved fans of the popular SEGA video game and its first two movies are in for a treat with the out-of-this-world third film. Sonic The Hedgehog 3 takes audiences on a thrilling journey that keeps them on the edge of their seats. However, there are some aspects that leave one wondering if perhaps the pace could have been slowed down a bit.
Carrey's Performance and the Story
At the London premiere, Jim Carrey was honest about his reason for signing on to this film. "I bought a lot of stuff, and I need the money, frankly," he admitted. His portrayal of Dr. Ivo Robotnik is nothing short of remarkable, especially with the impressive three-hour makeup transformation that brings his 110-year-old grandfather Gerald to life. It's a double dose of fun, but at times, it can be a bit over the top.The plot of this live-action/CGI animation mix sees our galactic superhero team of Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz), Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba), and Tails (voiced by Colleen O'Shaugnessey) enjoying domestic bliss with human parents Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter). But their peaceful life is suddenly disrupted when they are called into action by G.U.N. to deal with a formidable foe that they have rarely encountered before. Keanu Reeves lends his dour voice to the imposing Hedgehog Shadow, who was put in suspended animation 50 years ago and is now seeking revenge.Sonic and the team must reluctantly join forces with Robotnik, who has seen his life fall apart after being defeated in the second film. He spends his days watching bad telenovelas and dealing with his own decay. But when grandpa Gerald, who also spent 50 years in prison for helping Shadow, reawakens the evil side, they must race against time to obtain the keys to the ultimate weapon of destruction and prevent a global catastrophe.Tom and Maddie eventually join the operation and travel to London with the team. They find themselves in a dangerous situation as they face off against Shadow and the Robotnik duo around the globe, including action in Japan and a grand finale in outer space. Under the direction of Jeff Fowler, the film is filled with frenetic action and CGI, keeping viewers engaged from start to finish. The Cast and Their Performances
Jim Carrey's talent shines through as he brings Dr. Robotnik to life with even more manic energy. It's a shame that Ryan Reynolds and Deadpool have seemingly cornered the market on this type of performance recently. Ben Schwartz's Sonic is as lovable as ever, and Idris Elba's Knuckles is delivered with great skill. James Marsden and Tika Sumpter are incredibly likeable, making one wish they had more to do in the story. Natasha Rothwell as a kickass Rachel shows promise and could have been featured more prominently. The Visuals and Action
The CGI in Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is truly out of this world. From the detailed landscapes to the intense action sequences, every frame is a visual treat. The film is filled with fast-paced moments that keep the audience on the edge of their seats. Whether it's the action in London, Japan, or outer space, the visuals are sure to leave a lasting impression.Be sure to stay through the credits as there are some pretty vivid clues about who Sonic and the gang may be facing next. It seems that another adventure is just around the corner, perhaps in about 2 years.Producers Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, Toru Nakahara, and Hitoshi Okuno have brought this exciting film to life. With a talented cast and crew, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is a must-see for fans of the franchise and action lovers alike.
