Summer Concert Series to Support Music Education Fund
2025-04-01

A series of summer concerts has been organized to raise funds for a cause dedicated to providing musical instruments and lessons to students in need. This initiative includes ten events, six of which are Friday night gatherings known as Party in the Square, taking place in Clinton Square during July and August. In addition, there will be food-based Saturday events and a tribute concert honoring the Grateful Dead. All these activities are free to attend, with proceeds from beverage sales contributing to the music fund. A ticketed event called Smackfest will also take place on September 5 at the Central New York Regional Market. The nonprofit organization behind this effort, 727Instrumental, aims to help families who cannot afford musical resources for their children.

The nonprofit group 727Instrumental, founded last year by Mark DiGiorgio, is coordinating these events. Previously involved in running a for-profit concert promotion business, DiGiorgio now channels his passion into supporting music education. Through these concerts, the nonprofit seeks to collect funds not only from event proceeds but also through sponsorships, donations, and grants. Moreover, gently used instruments are being accepted, along with volunteers skilled in instrument repair and maintenance. The goal is to supply both traditional school band/orchestra instruments and those suited for rock/pop genres.

DiGiorgio's inspiration stems from a personal experience when his family could not afford to replace a saxophone he played during his school years. Determined to prevent similar situations for other students, he established 727Instrumental. He envisions partnerships with local schools, having already initiated contact with the Syracuse City School District. While still in the early stages, the project is steadily progressing.

Besides the fundraising concerts, various events are scheduled throughout the summer. These include themed nights such as R&B, country, and rock, each featuring multiple bands and food vendors. Notably, a tribute festival celebrating the Grateful Dead and a mac and cheese festival add variety to the lineup. Each event contributes to the overarching mission of promoting music education among young people.

As the summer unfolds, these concerts promise to bring vibrant music and community spirit to Syracuse while advancing an important educational cause. By combining entertainment with philanthropy, 727Instrumental hopes to inspire a new generation of musicians and ensure that financial constraints do not hinder access to music education. With a robust schedule of events and growing support, the initiative stands poised to make a meaningful impact.
