Unfiltered Fashion Insights from TikTok's Nicky Campbell

How It All Began

In January 2024, while lounging in bed, Campbell decided to share his thoughts on the previous night's Critics Choice Awards fashion. His "lazy" TikTok review, with apathetic one-word responses to the green screen photos, took off. The post received tens of thousands of views, and a follow-up review of the Emmys red carpet soared to over 300,000 views. Campbell recalls, "I was kind of hungover that day and thought, 'What should I do? I know! I'm going to run my mouth about this red carpet.' It was a whim that started something big."After graduating from Parsons School of Design in 2014 and working in the fashion industry, including at Vogue and the CFDA, Campbell found his niche on TikTok. Armed with his fashion knowledge and social media expertise, he carved out a following that now numbers 189,000 on Instagram and 136,000 on TikTok.

A-Listers Take Notice

After his third or fourth review, Campbell began receiving attention from A-listers. Lisa Rinna sent him messages saying, "This guy's so funny. You have to get him on the red carpet." Other celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Kris Jenner, and Charli XCX started seeking his approval on their outfits. One of the most memorable DMs came from Sarah Paulson, who said, "When you like something I wear, I literally scream. And when I let you down, it makes me rethink all my choices. You're so powerful." Campbell is still in shock by the influence his videos have on these stars.

Dealing with Criticism

Not all celebrities were pleased with Campbell's commentary. When he criticized Holland Taylor's choice to wear two brooches instead of one at the 2024 Emmy Awards, the 81-year-old actress defended her look. Taylor wrote in the comments, "I generally am right with you on your takes, but do want to say that while I agree with you re: wearing a brooch — clips — which is what I wore on my suit, are usually worn as a pair at either side of a wide neckline of a gown, or a boat neck or on strong lapels. Mine are paste pieces, bought by my mother, barely twenty. An insane extravagance at about $37 — $800 in today's money. Some paste is astonishingly good." Campbell posted the comment to his Instagram Stories and added, "Eating my words! The double — clips — are approved." He was amazed by Taylor's response and the resulting dialogue. This kind of discourse is what Campbell loves about fashion. He explains, "We all think differently, and our different backgrounds and experiences inform our opinions. That's what keeps fashion fun and alive. Ultimately, if someone feels good and looks good, that's what matters most."
