The Williamsport Music Club recently celebrated the achievements of young musician Lucas Bower by awarding him the 2025 Budd Memorial Scholarship. This prestigious honor, presented during an April gala held at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, highlights the club's commitment to nurturing musical talent among local high school students. The $1,500 scholarship is earmarked for a senior from Lycoming County who plans to pursue higher education in music. In addition to recognizing Bower's accomplishments, the event featured performances that showcased the vibrant musical community supported by the Williamsport Music Club.
At the heart of this celebration was Lucas Bower, an aspiring musician and organist currently attending St. John Neumann Regional Academy. His rendition of "Lord, Let at Last Thine Angels Come," arranged by Richard Gore, captivated the audience and concluded the evening's program with elegance. Under the tutelage of Jeffrey Johnson, Bower has developed his skills and aims to expand his knowledge further by studying business and music at Lycoming College in the fall. The Budd Memorial Scholarship not only acknowledges his current achievements but also supports his future aspirations in both fields.
Beyond the gala, the Williamsport Music Club continues its mission to promote music education through various initiatives. One such effort includes a "community night" fundraiser scheduled for May 6 at Hoss’s Family Steak and Sea House in Loyalsock Township. This event invites community members to contribute towards sustaining the club’s scholarship fund, ensuring that more talented individuals like Bower receive opportunities to thrive.
In anticipation of their next major event, the club is preparing a concert featuring selections from iconic Broadway productions. Scheduled for May 27 at Pine Street United Methodist Church, the evening promises an engaging experience as attendees are invited to participate in guessing mystery tunes throughout the performance. Accompanied by narration from Bonnie Seltzer and Tom Ruhl, the lineup includes David Koskey on piano, Jamie Chambers and Denise Clark performing flute duets, and vocalists Wayne Harris, Nathan Fulkerson, and Nick Biddle. Together, these artists will create a memorable theatrical journey celebrating the universal language of music.
Awarding scholarships and organizing events are just part of the Williamsport Music Club's broader vision to inspire future generations. By fostering creativity and supporting education, the club ensures that music remains a vital component of cultural life. Through initiatives like the Budd Memorial Scholarship and upcoming concerts, the organization demonstrates its dedication to enriching communities while honoring the legacy of those who came before.
