Discovering the Snake
Local authorities were alerted when the woman was seen attempting to flag down passing vehicles while walking barefoot along the Monash Freeway in Melbourne at around 10:40 a.m. on Saturday, November 30. She explained that she had been driving at 50 mph when she felt something on her foot. Looking down, she was horrified to find a deadly tiger snake slithering up her leg. This unexpected encounter left her in a state of shock.Despite the terrifying situation, the woman managed to fend off the snake while driving and dodging traffic. She was able to pull over and leap out of her car to safety. Paramedics were called in to check her for any bites, but she appeared to be unharmed.Handling the Snake
Tim Nanninga from Melbourne Snake Control was called in to handle the dangerous situation. He identified the reptile as a tiger snake, which is the third most venomous snake in Australia. According to Australian Geographic, bites from this snake can be fatal if untreated, causing pain in the feet and neck, tingling, numbness, and sweating, followed by breathing difficulties and paralysis. The venom also damages the blood and muscles, leading to renal failure.Nanninga explained that normally when snakes are in cars, they find a hidey hole and can stay there for days. But in this case, the snake had moved to the back of the car. As he safely removed the tiger snake from the woman's vehicle, passing motorists were left in bewilderment.Safety Tips
In the event of anyone coming across a tiger snake, Nanninga urged them to stay calm and keep their distance. He emphasized that these snakes are not out to hurt humans and will not chase after them. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of being aware of one's surroundings and taking appropriate safety measures when driving on the freeway.Never miss a story - sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.
