Uncover the Emotional Depth of Adam Lambert's Cabaret Performance

Adam Lambert's Favorite Song in the Show

Lambert, 42, tells PEOPLE that "I Don't Care Much" is probably his favorite song to sing in the show. It has a timeless quality with a beautiful melody. He gets to showcase his vocal and emotional abilities with this song. "There's a certain vulnerability in this song that really allows me to connect with the audience on a deeper level," he adds. This song comes in as the Nazi occupation begins in the musical. Lambert reflects on how it shows his character at his most vulnerable. The shadow of the Nazi party has started to affect everyone in Berlin, and the Emcee has to blend in by taking off his wild outfits and putting on a drab suit. "He's saying, 'Well, I don't really care; it doesn't matter to me,' but the audience can see through the performance. They know he's affected and very sad," Lambert continues.

The Relevance of the Song in Today's Political Climate

The Grammy nominee sees "I Don't Care Much" as something many can relate to in the current nation's political climate. "This show is so meta to what we're going through right now. There's a heavy-duty right wing leadership coming into power, and a lot of us are feeling vulnerable and upset. But seeing this show and performing in it provides a certain amount of therapy. It makes us ask ourselves, 'How are we dealing with it? Are we just pretending it doesn't matter? Are we turning a blind eye? Or are we facing it and being honest with ourselves?'" Lambert tells PEOPLE.

Recording the Song with a Crossover Appeal

Lambert's idea to record "I Don't Care Much" was met with excitement from the production team. He recorded it without his German accent for crossover appeal. "I figured it would be a bit strange with the accent, so it's more like me singing it with the arrangement from the show and the incredible musicians from the Kit Kat Club band," he laughs. "I hope fans will love it as much as we do."Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club was nominated for nine 2024 Tonys, including best revival. Tom Scutt took home the trophy for best scenic design of a musical. The production is currently playing an open-ended run, and Lambert and Cravalho are scheduled to play a limited engagement through Sunday, March 30, 2025. Casting for their replacements will be announced in the new year. Tickets for Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club are on sale now.
